I think it is really the headlights being converted to LED that is the main problem. See letter in practical classics

Tks for this. So I end up with the bizarre situation that I could upgrade the halogen bulb in my 79 XJS to an LED, should I wish. But I couldn't legally upgrade the bulb in the identical headlight in my 95 XJS!

In order not to disrupt Nick's thread on indicators, I think we need a separate thread on LED headlights for XJSs. I'm sure many owners will be interested.

Agreed. Good idea around the headlight issue.

Just for reference I did install an LED in the indicator socket and the result was a really good, bright light with only a slight deterioration in colour (I was expecting more). The downside being a doubling of the flashing speed, so as suggested would need additional resistance in the circuit. Put the original bulb back in.

Slightly related... I tried the better car lighting kit for my pre-facelift XJ-S. The upgrade rear running lights were (are - still working after a number of years) great but the rear brake light led replacements were not suitable. Although they are modified to compensate for the low current draw, my brake light warning module was not fooled, so out they came. I have not tried the front headlight replacement kit. I read somewhere that the post Brexit regulation concerning this is being tightened.
