rear flashers

Both rear flashers have stopped working on my 88 3.6. Front and repeaters work ok and also when hazards on, but rears not at all. From what i can see the only fuses cover all flashers so presumably not that?

Any ideas gratefully accepted!

Basics first, remove bulb and test that. Check for earth continuity and voltage at the bulb holder.
I can't recall anything that would stop both working at the same time.

First, I have no personal experience of the XJS models, however, I noted this post and as I have access to the relevant wiring diagram, here it is for what it's worth. There certainly doesn't seem to be any commonality between the left and righthand sides, though the effect of a problem with either or both those diodes might be interesting. What are the dash indicator lights doing?

I'd hope it's a coincidental failure of both rear bulbs, though I thought bulb failure was always (deliberately) accompanied by rapid flashing of the remaining bulbs?

I think i may have mentioned my self repairing XJ-S before well it's done it again! Went out to the garage to check earths again, but before i did thought i would just check if the indicators were working and sure enough all ok now! I can only think that it was an earth problem that too overnight to sort itself out after i'd tightened them last night.........doesn't seem likely so i'll go with self repairing, at least that should be a good selling point if i ever want to move it on!

A suggestion that came to me from our old friend BrakeBuster is that the hazard switch can cause these issues. The way to cure it is to turn the hazards on and off a good few times to clean up the contacts in the switch.

Yeah - I second that - the only issues I've ever had with XJS indicators were caused by the hazard light switch.
