Well as i sit here with a beer, i'm one happy bunny! Started stereo work early today, or at least i would have done, but i had left my lights on when i put her away in the garage, so a four hour delay until i could get her started! Anyway i took the time to work through the diagrams and my notes and put some new connections on the radio. Whilst i'm sure the car wiring is original, it was nothing like the diagrams for the XJ-S or the XJ6 even, so i decided on a best guess and ploughed on. Some time later, much to my surprise when i reconnected the battery and switched it on, i got music from the radio and the aerial rose up. Rather than fine tune it then i decided to fit it back properly and spend time later on it. Having finally cleared everything up i went back to it and found that now i get no sound! I thought probably a loose connection from pushing it back in, but then remembered that i'd isolated the battery whilst final fixing and probably needed to re-input the security code. Once i'd done that it was all OK so as usual with these things a tremendous feeling of satisfaction when it worked.
Thanks everyone for their help. when i get a chance tomorrow, i'll post a photo as it looks a lot better than the previous after market one to my eyes.

Excellent result! Well done with sticking with it.
Just check that it lights up with the head lights and that it doesn't forget stations when turned off and you have won

Photo attached of radio in situ. I'll keep a note of which wires went where in case it is of use for anyone else in the future.

Oh, and yes it does hold the stations and light up with the headlights on so a real result.
