Remote unlock problem

Postby ArtyH » Wed May 10, 2006 4:53 pm

I have a 1996 Celebtation, it is in excellent condition apart from needing the air con recharged, not supprising since it stood two years before I bought it.
However I now notice that when I unlock the car either by key or remote there is a buzzing noise from the boot. I think it MUST be the central locking unit in the boot, but would like confirmation as to where it is and is this a common fault? Is it easy to repair or a garage job£££?
Thanks for any advice.

Not just the Central Locking, but the overall Security ECM is located in the boot on the RH side attached by the two lower screws locating the rear light unit. It has 11 or 12 inputs or outputs on it.

Try getting a (close) friend or relative to lie in the boot with a torch and see if they can identify is it is the unit buzzing when you unlock it.

I have a 95 celeb and my air conditioning has failed becasue the evaporator is leaking - this is a known weakness in the late model as Jag sourced inferior parts to keep costs down :(. I hope this is not the case for you but mine gradually got worse and worse (several recharges) until it lasted only 2 days before the a/c was empty of gas.

I am searching for all the info I can find before I get the dahsboard out - one of my blowers has a dry bearing so it has to come out anyway so there should be a number of jobs (squeaking flaps) I can sort whilst it is all out.

Thanks for the reply everyone, I will try the boot trick with my 13 year old son he is smaller than me, being over 6 foot it would be a bit cramped.

graeme: same problem with A/C. No gas in at all, have not tried a recharge yet, but I know it is leaking somewhere in the engine bay. I was giving the engine bay a light coating with waxoil and noted the wax took on a purple tinge in some places, I think this is the dye in the gas to help identify leaks. Would I be right in thinking on these lines, or is the gas coloured differently?
Thanks for any advice offered.

My dye is green but I am sure there is a plethora of colours? I am afraid I do not know much more about it except that my a/c engineer said that if you run the a/c for a short while you should soon see the dye escaping - may need an ultra violet light to help see? The fact that mine had no obvious leaks in the engine bay pointed to the evaporator which was later diagnosed. When I bought the car the seller said the a/c was fine - bollocks! Why was there dye in the system!! They knew and obviously had the dye put in to find the leak - the fact they could not find an obvious one means big problems hence their eagerness to sell I am sure!
