Aero screen bracket

Good afternoon chaps

The clamp bracket holding one of my aero screens broke the other day. The weld failed where the pin fitted into the bracket. Has anyone else had this happen and have you managed to repair it or should I just see if I can buy a new bracket from Roger.

Hello Neil,
Glad to say that I have had no experience of this so can be of no help however, I will see Roger on Friday at the NEC, what if anything would you like me to ask him?

Hi Neil,

No, I've never seen them used on anything else other than a Suffolk SS100.
They're certainly different to the "Brooklands"-type aero screens, which have wing-nut attachment to the side posts.

Niel, I am not to suprised to here of your bracket failure.I have recently been driving around in normal use of the car with the aero screens off and only put them on for more special occasions. I have noticed a while back particularly with the passenger side screen that they shake a lot particularly on certain road surfaces and on bad bumps they shake really badly and I thought its only a matter of time before something breaks. I you want to send your broken bracket to me I will see if I can repair it for you. The only problem might be the chrome. I might be able to make one in stainless steel. Cheers John.

Hi Neil
I have never removed mine since I fitted them 17k miles ago and only use them very occasionally with the screen folded down
I have not experienced the shakes over bumps like John
I can only assume there was a flaw in the bracket
I have seen them for sale on the internet but sorry I cannot remember where worth a look if you can find the supplier may be able to buy just the bracket

There you go Neil,
Just as I suspected, what with your need for new tyres, your worn suspension bushes and now a broken aero screen bracket to say nothing of your patent exhaust bobbin fix, you just enjoy driving too much and too fast.
Let Sue have a go and you have a snooze !!!!!

Hi Neil,

I've just experienced the same problem with my offside aeroscreen. The weld holding the pin failed (actually, it looks more like metal fatigue). Fortunately, I had the main screen up at the time and was able to save it at 70mph (your honour).

Did you manage to get yours fixed or find a replacement? Or did you buy a new bracket from Roger?

I have been very remiss and have done nothing. The garden looks nice and the soft fruit is planted but the broken bracket is still broken. It looks like a fatigue failure and this week (it is car week this week, MOT on Friday) I shall get it off and ask my mate to weld it as a temp fix before looking at the problem further. The weld failed and so perhaps a stepped pin is needed to ensure there is more material.

Neil,

I have emailed Roger to see if he can supply a replacement, although I'm sure he's still in NZ at the moment, so I don't expect a quick reply.

Meanwhile, I'll just have to drive with the screen up or refuse passengers (I've swopped the broken O/S pin with the intact N/S one).

Neil,

I've had a reply from Philip at Suffolk Sportscars. He is currently having a batch of the brackets made and will send me a replacement when they are ready.

If you would like one, contact Philip: theworkshop@suffolksportscars.com

Update: received the new bracket today (the workshop call it a "pintle"). The pin has a knurled finish, which is much better than the original splines.

How much did it cost?

Gratis. :D

N.B. - they have changed the screw size slightly, so I had to drill out the pintle bracket's screw holes slightly.

Roy,
That's good news, I have always found that the factory are very good at letting you have small bits and bobs gratis. Makes a nice change from the mainstream car makers. The high level brake light on my Beetle has failed and VW want £113.00 for a new one !!! They will fit it for free though !!!!!
