Rear Wheel Movement

When my car was up on a car lift today my garage man checked for any movement in the wheels
On rear offside there was some movement but spinner was up tight.
I took wheel off and spline adaptor and managed to persuade the large nut on the half shaft to move by a further segment to relocate the split pin. On reassembling the wheel was still moving.
Can someone shed some light on this The whole axle was built by Suffolk and the car has done 3500 from new. Does this sound like a main bearing or is it something else? Would really appreciate any advice

It depends on how much movement you have, if your garage man mentioned, it what did he think. The rear bearings are fairly substantial .

Like you, I let Suffolk build my back axle and I have felt some movement but investigation has identified this as spoke/wheelnut interference between the inside of the spokes and the wheel nuts holding on the spline adaptor.
Do you have any witness marks on the wheelnuts? if there are, ease the wheel off and rotate it a couple of splines and check for movement. You might also consider tightening the nuts with the marks by just half a flat. Whenever I remove a wheel I always ensure it goes back on in the same place if at all possible.
I have noticed that when ever I have a spoke/nut problem I get a swishing sound when going round a bend on that side. So I always do a run through some local bends after putting the wheels back on to check all is well.

Thanks for your very practical information. I will have another try tomorrow and see if there is any improvement.
All the other wheels seem fine so hopefully this is just a rogue situation that can be overcome in the manner you suggest.

No witness marks that I could see but I turned the wheel to new position on the splined adaptor and movement was much reduced. Also whilst wheel was off I jammed a timber up the adaptor and tried to get some movement but there was none so proving your point about where the problem was.
