Engine oil

Postby Brunel100 » Sat Jan 20, 2018 10:53 am

Could I ask for peoples experiences of using engine oils other than the couple recommended by Suffolk?
I’ve been buying Castrol 20w-50 in 20 litre barrels but feel I’m paying for the name and that there are perfectly good alternatives available at considerable savings.

Castrol Classic XL is about £4.00 - £4.50 per litre for a 20 litre barrel (a price I'm prepared to pay for the quality of the product). An 8 litre oil change will therefore cost £32 - £36 in lubricant. A 25% lower price gives a saving of only £8 - £9 per oil change.

How much are you paying for the Castrol and what is your target spend?

I have used Halfords Classic 20/50 in my Suffolk (4.2L) for 5 years. 27K miles and no problems apart from leaks.
