Removing rear door cards.

Postby johnnewzealand » Thu Nov 27, 2014 7:01 am

Hi.
Think I have a water leak from inside R.R. door.
Door seals seem good, as do window seals etc., but seem to be getting some water in at bottom of the door, i.e. getting past the actual door seal, and the "inner" seal on the car body.
Any thoughts.
Removal of the "door card" ??? How's it done?
I know the screws under the rubber insert in the door pull - but how about the rest?
B rgds. to all, johnnewzealand.

Pull the card away from the bottom edge of the door and continue up the sides. Lift the card upwards and then have some fun with the trim plate around the chrome door lever. That done, disconnect the cable plugs and the car should come away from the door frame.

Hope that helps.

Hi Mike, and thanks for your quick response.
However, I think I have found the "culprit" after careful applications of water to various areas of the door, and it's NOT from behind the "card".
Note - this is regarding the rear doors.
Water was evident in the "tread-plate" area, i.e. inside the main door seal, and had built up enough to wet the carpet in that area slightly. Seals seemed good, and NO evidence of this having been a problem previously, and I thought maybe coming from inside the door!
I now think the ingress of water was coming from the "outer" curved "ribbed" seal on the wheel arch part of the door. I "eventually" (after copious applications of water) found one of the "clips" on this seal wasn't fully pressed home!
I have recently bought the car, 2004 year in excellent condition, and cleaned all the "rubber" door seals thoroughly with silicon liquid, and think I've probably pulled out the clip slightly.
Pressed home this clip fully and water ingress seems to have stopped.
I have had an S-type (2001 model) and always had "slight" water droplets around the rear doors after a thorough washing, but never anything to worry about.
Seems the "outer" seal (wheel arch) needs to be good?
Anyone with similar "problems" - look into this area - i.e. make sure those wee clips are fully pressed home.
Hope this may help others, and thanks again Mike for your excellent response.

A pleasure, John.

The door interiors are well made with the bottom of the door frame and outer skin joint receiving a copious amount of sealer and other protective materials, presumably to enhance and give good corrosion protection. Most reassuring in case of water ingress via the seals.

Pleased you managed to fix the issue and thanks for letting us all know the outcome.

Hi again Mike, & all reading etc.
Unfortunately I haven't sorted the problem out fully yet.
After to-days good washing was surprised to find water again in the tread plate area, but definitely getting in only along the door bottom bit. No sign of any water ingress from the wheel arch bit, so definitely was worthwhile ensuring clips on that seal were fully pressed home.
The "outer" seal - main door seal that goes right round the door seems good - but, definitely water getting past the bottom bit - so will continue to try and sort it!
As said, previous car always had some water droplets after washing in all door areas, but definitely wasn't anything to be concerned about. The other doors on this car are the same, i.e. minor droplets, but this rear right is a bit unusual!
Cheers, johnnewzealand.

Is the top external trim to glass seal in good condition?

The clear internal plastic membrane between the door card and the frame needs to be un-perforated and well stuck to the frame.
