This may have been mentioned before, but aren't the car values quoted on http://www.jec.org.uk/valuations/481/va ... .html#XJ-S a little out of date?

Ever so slightly methinks.
And they don't even mention the 5.3 XJR-s ones.

There was a Celebration coupe for sale at the NEC Classic Car Show. It was nice enough but lacked preparation ( a small dent in a front wing, one wheel with chips in the paint, scruffy under bonnet etc).
It's principal sales point was 37,000 miles.
The asking price was £23,995.
Remember this was a coupe not a convertible!
On Friday the salesman was very confident that he'd get that price over the weekend. On Sunday night he was packing up to take it home again. Either over priced or poorly prepared? Not sure which!
However, I have seen a Celebration Convertible on eBay for £30k. Again, I don't know if it actually sold for that much.
I recently renewed my agreed valuation with Lancaster at £20k (for my Celebration Convertible as seen on the club stand at the NEC this year) and they didn't bat an eyelid!
I would agree that values are on the rise. I put it down to most of the scruffy cars having disappeared now and the better cars that are left. There is an increasing interest I think and the 40th anniversary has raised the profile.
I also think the XJS is coming of age. I was struck by how many people remarked " what a beautiful car" at the NEC. It just seamed to catch the eye. I think the once controversial looks of the XJS have matured well in the public eye. Now that the modern Jaguar design language has moved in a new direction the XJS is seen as a traditional and classic old Jag.

Well there has been a lot of noticeable increased commentary over the past 12 months around XJS as investments and they are no longer assumed to be in the bargain basement category. As mentioned, there are also many cars being advertised at what I would consider vastly inflated prices, but that said, all these forces come together and reinforce confidence around appreciating values which are increasing in a patchy way. I'm not convinced low mileage is a good indicator of a quality car.

I know few of us have these cars due to their value, but when you're paying out constantly for bodywork and maintenance etc, it's nice to know that a) the car is actually worth an increasing proportion of what is spent and b) that it's acknowledged that these are worthy classics which higher values reflect I think.

On a separate note, having just had a garage built to house the thing and after some fairly costly restoration work earlier in the year, my issue now is that it's a hassle to get the car out and I am constantly watching the skies...completely OCD now which is costing me driving time...at least when it was on the drive I'd think 'why not take it out on the roads as it's cold and damp out there anyway'. Bloody garage.

Hi all,
The valuations page is indeed out of date. I will have a look into this and get it removed/updated.

Update rather than remove I think, otherwise we will have nothing to discuss/argue/moan about!

Recently a Facelift 6.0 XJR-S sold for 14.5k with Anglia, I think there's a real upturn. The valuations page could do with a refresh, it's a really useful reference. But having been a valuations officer for another club in the past, it's a real pig of a job!

How are values decided upon with older cars such as the XJS? I know it's what someone is prepared to pay but how can that information be gathered accurately. Just because someone has a certain figure in an advert doesn't mean it will be achieved. Auction prices can be collated but especially with premiums attached may not be completely representative.

On a similar theme, how would an insurance company value an XJS if an agreed value isn't in place.

Pop,

I spoke to the Hagerty boys recently re. the compilation of their price guide. They are seeking to both expand the number of models and the breadth of price sources. At the moment they only seem to be working on the basis of confirmed auction results, being the only data that they can trust. Naturally, that means they are working on a pretty small sample. So, although it's a good start, I wouldn't put too much store by it for certain cars.

£14k agreed valuation for mine. Would not get that on ebay though. However, even on that auction site values are increasing. There is a lot of optimistic pricing with mostly classic car dealers who are starting to pile into XJS as the next big thing; I'm not too sure how well these are selling as they may be trying to peak too soon with the buy at inflated prices now for investment purposes strap-line...

Some auction results from last week:
http://www.angliacarauctions.co.uk/en/c ... d-january/

Interesting variations in cost, £2,625 for a 1991 3.6 coupe to £13,650 for a 1983 V12 coupe.

Prices are all over the place. (And lots of interesting cars on there as well as Jaguars).

Interesting cars for sure. The £2,625 achieved by a 1987 Austin Montego 1.6L is quite shocking - seriously?

The 24k miles Jag XJ-S V12 at just over £13k would be about right. If at a specialist Classic car dealer that would be closer to £20k.

Has anyone tried https://cazana.com/uk ?

Mine comes out at £14,700 which is likely to be £10,000 too much unless things have changed dramatically
