I normally try and avoid potholes, but if I do run over one I get a 'clonk' from somewhere in the rear of my convertible, possibly on the offside.
BUT - this only happens when the hood is up. There is absolutely no sound when bumping over a pothole with the hood down!
Obviously not a suspension problem then.
Anyone got any ideas on what else might be the cause please?

Richard,

If as you say, it definitely doesn't do it with the hood down, then it would seem to relate to things that are in different positions when the hood is up. A couple of suggestions:

- Check the fixing nuts on the hood hydraulic strut on the offside

- Check the offside rear window regulator. You could eliminate this by putting up the rear windows when the hood is down and see if the problem is still there. (Put the hood down, switch the hood pump to manual, then operate the hood up switch for 10 seconds to force the windows up)

Good Luck

Richard – It’s difficult to know what else to suggest as seemingly your problem is “Hood” related. Had it not been I would have looked at the security of the silencer since it runs very close to the bodywork in this area. Also suspect possibly would be the radius arm bushes. Worth a look.

Alternatively drive around with the hood down. But let us know what you eventually find.
