after SORNing her for the winter and doing some minor upgrades...... . the time has come to put her back on the road

Tax , i can do nothing about and it is what it is , but at least these days its more flexible to get done

MOT , same as above, put her in and cross your fingers , but usually OK

Insurance , well , the renewal came through at £160 , fully comp with legal and recover , not bad.... so i thought, did some shopping around, and after working out some discounts and cash back rebates i can gat the same for £89..........yes, £89....

so i cancelled the renewal , and will go with the new policy ,

every penny counts

At least the 40 year tax exemption is still running, shame it wasn't 25 years as in the past. I know that doesn't help you or me much right now, but there will be some 'historic tax exempt' XJSs on the road soon I hope.

Are you taxing from 1st April, or giving them 3 weeks freebies :(

well, if i was going to the monthly breakfast meeting i would have bit the bullet and taxed it for the last few days of the month

but as i'm off to the NEC for the practical classic car show, and taking the company car, i will go from April onwards for the new tax

all in all, i think its cheap motoring for driving such a car for leisure

i don't think so ,

and something else i found out is that you can't use accumulated NCD for classic car insurance, you have to start from scratch , so thats with 2 years NCD since i put her back on the road

otherwise i would have 10 years NCD

As far as I am aware you can't accrue any NCD on a Classic policy, you have to have another car with it although that might differ with other companies.

I paid similar money for a £13K agreed valuation with Footman James. These guys were really easy to deal with - no long history forms and bills going back 10 years plus to evidence. They agreed the valuation there and then on the phone (even with all my modifications).

NCB on a classic policy would not really work as classic policies assume that you don't use your cat as an everyday car. It's usually mandatory to run at least another car in the household that accrues NCB before you are eligible for a classic policy.

Incidentally, I found an old quotation from the same company back in 2008 for nearly £600 for the cat without the modifications. Back then they would not cover the cat on a classic as it was not old enough and even with all my NCB (15 years+) £600 was very steep. I guess the point I'm making is that in most circumstances a classic policy represents better value if it's not your main car.

Admiral run a multi-car policy that you can add a classic car to. This initially appealed since we have two cars on a multi car policy already. Unfortunately, it involved a very long call and many many exclusions so in the end I gave up... :(

so , to update,
the £89 ( after cash back )from Admiral offer expired when i hit the buy it button a few days later.......typical

so i did another search , and when it all panned out i ended up going with Footman James direct from the magazine

gone with a fully comp classic car insurance policy , with agreed value of 15k , excess of £100 , for £155 , but took out a few extras for peace of mind , like the buy back premium , and personal cover

i think these will be better in the long run as its specifically for my car rather than a generic policy ,though fully legal doesn't allow for the nuances of a classic car

and at under £200 i can't complain

just got to go to the cash back site now to arrange breakdown cover from the RAC , £12.50 cash back on a £27.99 policy ,
