Hi all, finally i got my act together on the Jec forum. Got in a pickle with loggin on ect... I have an XJR-s '92 and she's in great condition. I want to have her checked over and tuned. She's all serviced and mot'd and running well but I felt some slight wierd movement in breaking from 70mph down to 30mph on the m6 the other day and i'd like to get that & the v12 set up well. Anyone got any good manchester garage recommendations, club friendly and not cowboys! Need someone who knows xjs' throughout.
good to be here at last!

Just to add as I educate myself on my new car, any xjs/xjr-s sites or info that I can be directed to will be very much appreciated. Mg, Rover P5b and '62 mini was my thing 15yr ago. Jags are more complicated like the P5 was back then. Luckily I'm not in for a rebuild this time with my XJR-s (hopefully) but am already tinkering so as to get her in beautiful working order for some well earned trips. My main concern as I mentioned in last post is checking through the breaks/discs/pads. She wobbled a bit as I brought her down from 70mph to 30mph, wasn't stamping on break but firm. Need a good reliable garage to visit and build relationship as i get work on her sorted over coming months. My temp guage is above the centre (just) and rises on idle after a run. Never in red though (thankfully) but i get a sneaky feeling she's a tad hot. There's a lot of heat from the v12 generally. Any ideas what this 6.0l should be cooking at? And lastly she has P6000 tyres that will need renewing in a couple of months. Any manchester hints? Listen to me, I'm like a baby! Sorry to be a bore peeps but wanna catch up on this stuff asa. She's my first Jag and I'm thrilled to bits.

Welcome to the extended XJS family, your enthusiasm is great to see.
I didn't post previously as I can't help with a local garage but your mention of a previous love affair with P5B's prompted me to reply.
My previous love was the P6B one of which I owned (amongst quite a few) for fifteen years and did over a hundred thousand miles in inc. full engine rebuild and bodywork restoration - super car

(not supercar!). I traded it in at a classic car dealers against my previous 3.6 xjs four years ago. Other toys included 2.8i Capris and a Sierra 2.8 4X4 (fantastic roadholding and performance but ate gearboxes for a past-time

)
Re brakes, it sounds as if your front discs are at their end and a front brake overhaul is in order, they should pull up well and straight. There are options eg EBC Green Stuff etc. but the genuine Jag bits should show a marked improvement. Your car may well have up-rated brakes being an XJR-S?. Having said that the nature of the rear brake set-up is such that they can get overlooked.......as a matter of interest how is the handbrake?
Re info on the car you could do a lot worse than trawl your way through this site as a start, there's a load of useful info buried within, with pointers to other sites too.
Good Luck

Thanks DH,
Spot on with front discs, I'm getting them seen too next week. Luckily the specialist where I got the car from has a good heart and is meeting me with cost as I've only had her 2 weeks now. He's ordering the discs and with labour charging max £150 to set up. He'll also check the joints and pads ect. I half fancied doing it myself but no time at mo and seeing as that seems to be the only problem, then £150 and back on the road before the seriously dodge weather sets in seems the right thing to do. It seems the wobble happens only when breaking down from speeds over 50/60mph (quite firmly) which suggests they malfunction when they get v hot. I'm not a hot headed driver but noticed it on a manchester to london run the other day. You may know the dealer, based in York now called Harrogate Classics. Hopefully no one will have a bad word to say about them. I found them decent. Their set up is on an industrial site right next to the air museum hanger.
Reg handbreak, i have no idea as i have that terrible habbit of not using handbreak on autos unless on a decline. What are you telling me? If it doesn't work i need to look at the rear breaks? Being inward but working ok I'd rather not use handbreak than find rear break probs knowing the hassle thay can be.
Ahh my P5b. The P6b was awesome. I fell in love with p6's from a kid. My folks neighbour had a 3500 in beige. I found the P5b out in North London and got her for £800. I remember jumping for joy at the bargain. As i started to strip her my heart sank at the job in hand. I ended up replacing much of the corroded chassis and she was an up hill struggle for a year. Finally on the road with engine rebuild and nearly a1 I took her on tour through france and spain. Superb cruise. On way home loaded with sister and 2 kids ( a drop off via holand) the engine blew and the then fab 5 star aa rescued the family and the car. Back home I got the engine back out, rebuilt and sadly the affair was well and truely over. Fingers crossed the v12 has more legs. Seeing as she's only 65k in and a pretty bullet proof motor, i should be ok. She's in very very good condition throughout.
Nice to meet you online DH. Cheers.

Rear Brakes

Not only is the rear brake set-up inboard but the handbrake has separate
calipers and pads which are on top and difficult to access and service unless you have got the knack, consequently they get "overlooked" ( also as some people tend not to use them in autos

)
However, this is an MoT item and you don't want to find the handbrake doesn't work on your MoT test or for that matter when you have to stop in traffic on a 1 in 4 hill and then try to pull away again (the gearbox selector may complain a bit):roll:
Perhaps you should find a bit of a hill and bite the bullet..........if there is a problem I would have thought the supplier should be sympathetic to sorting this as well as they should have ensured the car was of "merchantable quality" when they sold it.
Good Luck
