MoT time

I took the XJS in for her MoT this morning and it passed with no advisories!

As with most of you, I only take my cars to places that I trust and the MoT tester that I use has a real understanding and respect of older cars. For example, he knows that XJSs will tend to have a designed amount of play in the front wheel bearings. My front end suspension has been completely rebuilt in the last few weeks, so I wasn't expecting any problems there, but he did suggest that the passenger side might benefit from nipping up the bearing just a touch.

He knows that I have an LSD, so he won't use the rollers for the brake test and uses a digital Tapley meter for a driven brake test. He even remarked that my handbrake reading of .69 was exceptional (.25 is the pass reading) which implies that the rear-end rebuild I did last month seems to be ok as well!

He also found that both my headlights were marginally above the height limit. From talking to me, he realised that my front end rebuild has slightly raised the stance of the car which seems to have changed the light alignment. But being a knowledgeable guy, he also knows that no XJS owner has ever been able to dazzle another driver with their headlights! So, he's suggested that I drop them both a fraction if the suspension doesn't settle down any further. The erratic horns got a little tap from his screwdriver (they worked last night when I did the same thing!) and sprang into life. However, I noticed that they didn't work on the way home, so it's time to pull the undertray and have a good look.

The emissions were great with a CO of .09 and HC of 47.

So, all in all, a good morning!

Paul,
I'm with you on the subject of MoT's. You can't beat having a caring, knowledgeable chap looking over your pride and joy.
When it comes to my MoT, ( well the car's Mot ) 'er indoors and I have a nice day out in Woodbridge whilst the car is in the care of the garage that does all of Roger Williams cars, they therefore fully understand what a Suffolk SS100 is all about.
The round journey of 120 miles is a small price to pay for a good MoT and some even better fish & chips on the quayside.

Paul,
Pleased for you , good news indeed, but enlighten us as to 'LSD' - last time I saw the acronym it was something that the hippies were taking which convinced them they could fly out of First floor windows.
My car (1994) goes in tomorrow to solve the 'Check Engine' puzzle light. The garage have a trip computer which they connect to my clock lead. I have often wondered if the information which is available at the clock can be diverted to a proper OBD2 outlet so that the car can be diagnosed without all this hassle. Any ideas?
Did you see that a kind member has put the full XJS info on site? Can it go on our main website?
PaulE.

LSD= Limited Slip Diff

and some say it should be put on a rolling road to check brake balance etc,

though at the speeds the rollers go , i can't see any issue with doing it that way myself,

congrats on the MOT

Paul,

Tks for your thoughts. As BB has just posted, LSD = Limited Slip Differential. All XJSs have LSDs, therefore, they shouldn't be brake tested on roller setups other than the very new ones that can handle non-viscous 4-wheel drive vehicles. ....Or so I've always understood. There have been a number of threads on this with some people believing that they don't cause any problems. My understanding has always been that they will cause wind-up in the axles if the other wheel(s) aren't able to rotate. Anyway, the two garages that I use still won't brake test old Range Rovers and any cars with LSD on their new 1-man MoT bays because even they don't have the rollers that can handle this.

I'll write to the club mgt re. the issue of hosting the copyright jaguar publications. I'll also reply back in your thread re. the OBD protocols to avoid hijacking this thread. Good luck with the diagnosis.
