Noisy ventilation fans

As a newcomer to home repairs on this car can anyone point me to a mugs guide to accessing the ventilation blower fans? One is now so noisy that I cannot hear the radio until the temperature comes up and the fan slows down. I cannot work out from the Parts Manual or Haynes where I should start to take it to bits!

Downloading Kirby Palms on-line 'book' is a good start, it has a lot of useful information an many things including the blowers.

If it is the Delanair MkIII system, our own MarkB has also more then a little knowledge on the fan speed control electronics, which will need dealing with whilst the're out

The Jaguar service manual has a good section on removing fans if you have a copy, it guided me pretty well as a first-timer. If not I can photocopy mine and send it to you, send me a personal message if you want one. What year is the car?
In any event its an awkward job in terms of how you have to twist your body to get in there and get at it, though not a difficult one assuming you have a reasonable toolkit. I think some people take the relevent seat out so you can lie in the car in relative comfort (I didn't......... ). Passenger fan, five hours from start to finish inc. sorting fan on the bench (89 3.6 Coupe). I believe the drivers side is a little more troublesome due to the steering column. On v. late cars the glove box (which you have to take out for L/H fan) is replaced with the air-bag, I dont know if this comes into the equation but would advise you check first!
If your fan is v.noisy the bearings may be shot, in which case I think you may have to replace it.
Good Luck :)

You might want to get a used one from a breaker rather than struggle to repair it if you find the bearing too far gone or fan blades disintegrating, there's quite a few breakers advertise fans from time to time on eBay.

Couple tips from me, access to the fan unit I found possible without removing seat if I lie on back with head in foot well, mind you I'm 5' 4". Also to actually get the unit out the bulkhead you have to manually force the recirculation flap open (to close the fresh air flap snagging on the bulkhead aperture). Another tip try and test it in the footwell before fitting it, you should find the wires just about reach.

The electronics in these things (Darlington transistor, a few diodes and other assortments) are easily available from places like Radio Shack etc. Although not a complicated circuit you will need to exercise a little care when fabricating the replacement pack and not to apply too much heat which will destroy all your previous good endeavours.

IMO by far the best approach is to seek out a good second hand replacement from a reputable source. £50 - £60 should do it and the aggravation saved by less cussing and having the air-con inoperative more than makes up for the trouble.

Been there and done that – Good luck.

Could be an early model, pre DelanairIII, without the electronic fan control. Ianmac hasn't told us yet
