BB,

You just know it's going to sail through! Whereas my x350 is due next week and this morning has suddenly thrown up more dash lights than a Christmas tree!

thanks boys ,

yup , sailed through  , but for some reason i felt some trepidation, even though i went round her thoroughly yesterday

one small advisory ,

a brand new track rod end on the near side had the smallest of play in it , other than that he commented on how clean it was , and much better than some three year old cars getting their first MOT , which in fact there was before mine and it failed on split brake hoses and bald tyres , go figure

but i'm now a happy chappy

gearbox flush now on Thursday ,

BB

Good result, Vince. Most pleasing for you.

You must have the cheapest MOT of the year. At least the track rod end is only £12.50!

Put my 350 in for MOT last week. Not good news!
Both rear lower wishbone bushes floppy. Have to replace the whole wishbone as new bushes can't be pressed in - not funny!!
My V12 also has to go in before the end of the month. Hopefully that'll do better!

David,

Slightly off tangent, but why can't you get the bushes replaced? They are sold separately by everyone, so I guess it must be possible to replace them.

they used to say that about the 308's , but it was an ok job with a 20 tonne press and some ingenuity ,

buy the wishbones from 'wor Neville at North East Jag Spares, cheapest there is, bolt on , dead easy, 30 mins or so a side, saves having the car off the road having bushes pressed in

One unexpected advantage of my recently purchased XJR-S is that it is too low at the front to go on the brake rollers so it was the old fashioned 'car park' brake test; drive it forwards, brake; drive it backwards, brake: passed.
Result!
Completely ignores the fact that there is massive steering wheel shimmy when braking at speed of course.
Still, on the ramps tomorrow to find out the problem.
Still got a pass though...........

my brakes nearly ripped the tyres from the wheels on the rollers,

i got a reading of 520 on both fronts , enough to stop a lorry , lol

the rears came in around 350 , and the handbrake was 220 , he was very complimentary about the brakes, and in fact spent most of the time under the car saying he might as well not be bothering and when he spotted the goodyear braided hoses almost didn't bother with a visual brake test until i said i would jump in the car to do it , lol

i always try and spend time ' chatting ' to the tester if i can and he doesn't mind, they soon realise I'm a freak  and know every nut and bolt

he spent most of the time oohing and ahhing at the underside and my colour coding of components, lol

Maybe it was your underside that he was oohing and aahing at?

BB,

I know we've had this conversation before, but are modern rollers ok to test an LSD-equipped car such as the XJS, in your opinion? I thought that rollers induced "wind-up"in the diff? Perhaps modern rollers work differently? I always point out to the MoT tester that the car has an LSD and so they test the brakes using a Tapley meter instead.

I took my V12 into my local garage a few years ago for MOT and he complained that it broke his rolling road! Too much grunt I guess. Cost him £1500 to fix apparently and now he does a road test on it instead.
