P600 - are they essential? I was told that they had been replaced by the P6000 which have been replaced by the P Zero. They must be gold plated and destined for a museum collection at that price.

Plenty of others about at much less - see Black Circles website who are a thoroughly recommended retailer and the face of future tyre business now that they are setting up in Tesco carparks.

What car are you wanting to shod?

1989 XJRS that I just bought off Ebay.
The rears are perished and need replacing.
For some reason the rears are 235 section but the fronts are 225, not sure if that is original spec or if someone has fitted bigger ones at the rear.
Going down to 225 section shouldn't affect the speedo (which is spot on) should it because that is influenced by the profile isn't it?
Obviously there are lots more 225 profiles around than 235 so I think that I'll go for them.

Rich posted this link a while ago, download the tyre calculator and you can work out the differences between any tyre sizes:

The P600 is still Pirelli's official Jaguar offering for the 235 /60 15 98W tyre size. It is stamped with a "J" for Jaguar after the 98W. Produced in small infrequent batches, there are some in stock at present. Black Circles current price is about £213, or £227 fitted.

I don't think you'll find them cheaper than £206.

Good luck

Thanks guys.
I think that I am going to go for 225 ones, they are less than half the price.
Just have to decide between Avons and Falkens.

I didn't particularly want P600s, just did a couple of searches for the 235 section ones and they kept coming up on various sites; I guess that not many companies make that particular size.

cool

but were you going by what is already fitted to the car by a PO ( that might not be correct ) or by the owners manual ??

When I first got RVT (many years ago), it had a mixture of different makes of tyre fitted all 225/60 15. As 3 of them needed replacing I bought 5 new P600 tyres of the correct 235/60 size (available and not that expensive back then).

When the day comes that one or more need replacing it will be a decision whether to mix sizes or replace the lot. I'm not really sure if mixing is acceptable, if it is which to put on the front or back etc.

It would be good to hear from one of the club experts, perhaps in a club magazine article, although I have a feeling that no-one would dare to put in print anything other then to stay with the Pirelli P600 which was the Jaguar recommendation for my model :?

axel changing is accepted but the tyres must be the same spec , and if rotated properly , even wear can be achieved allowing all four to be replaced at once if required , it is also accepted to have different profile on the back to the front for example,

i have just read my 1988 owners manual ( my car is 17 Jan 1989 ) , and it states that 215/70/15 tyres should be used, but doesn't mention a manufacturer ,

the p600 tyre is old technology , though the best in the day for the application i would expect ,

dont get me wrong, i would be the first to want original spec equipment if available, and affordable, especially if being used for concourse shows

but there are more modern better fuel efficient and quieter tyres that are easily suitable for our cars for every day use , lets face it, who drives round looking for four star petrol these days ?? or uses full mineral oil ??

its good to debate

Talking of fuel efficiency, is there really that much difference between A and G or even E and G?
Are we talking noticeable differences that are only achieved by skilled test drivers or miniscule amounts achievable in day to day driving.
It's bad enough having a thirsty V12 anyway without adding to the misery with thirsty tyres!

My XJR-S has the bigger tyres on the rear along with much higher profile too, looks a little odd in these days of low profile tyres but its what JaguarSport fitted from the factory. Now Toyo are the only manufacturer to make the very odd rear sizes.

Fronts 225x50
Rears 245x55

But that is a facelift!
