Diesel XJS?

Saw this over the weekend and just had to copy it over knowing it would provoke responses positive and negative!.
Gut instinct was "nnnnooooo" but with a 3L Diesel XF on the drive (which I love), I am in a quandary.......

What do you think?
I don't see that many BMW 6 Series diesels on the road, Mercedes Coupe diesel are 20 a penny and not worthy of my attention (I despise the dealers, not the brand). Would a diesel XJS or XK make a mark?.
Mmmm....

Interesting but 2.2 will be a bit gutless I think.......
....anyway why would you? Fuel saving probably not so good (if at all) to make it worth the effort?
Annual mileage and 4.0 engine would make standard fit the best way to go? Quite apart from servicing difficulties in future?
Just my two penneth....

The 2.2 diesel has more torque than the 5.3 V12 so I don't think it would that gutless! Would probably need the modern 8 speed gearbox to give both the best performance and economy. Quite a big technical challenge I would think. Not least as the XF doesn't have a conventional gear lever and has paddles on the steering column. It wouldn't sound right though - a 4 pot diesel just wouldn't be right.
As far as the suitability of Diesel engines in GT cars goes, I think my X350 TDVi is just as refined as either of my XJS's if not more so! And if you've ever driven the XF S diesel that had 275 bhp and gets to 60mph in less than 6 seconds then you'd see that performance is not lacking! That's faster than any XJS.
When you factor in the fuel economy then there's a strong argument for say a diesel engined XK.
I think the only reasons why Jaguar haven't done it is the prejudice of traditional Jaguar buyers. I guess that it would be popular in Europe (after all Mercedes, Audi and BMW all do it) but Jaguar's major markets are elsewhere like China and USA.
It would be interesting to see a project to put a V6 diesel in an XJS and how the technical challenges were overcome!

All noted...and well put. Yes a 350TDVi would probably be fine in an XjS.
My point is why bother?
Certainly not on cost or economy grounds, how many miles would you have to do to pay for the conversion?
Regarding the advertised car I think the same applies, why would you? Few people use an XJS as a daily driver nowadays and even if they do their mileage probably still wouldn't justify the hassle.
As a project with unlimited funds fine, but I still can't see the point

PS Rover put gas turbines in cars in the fifties..........now that would be a project

As you say, what's the point? Well, there's no point, that's the point! Just an interesting challenge!

living on the moon is also an interesting challenge, but its expensive, hard to do , and whats the point but to say , we can.....
any engine can be shoe horned into any car, but what is the reason for doing it ? its not economical , and the money spent on doing the conversion would probably pay for ten years worth of petrol..........( if its done properly )
imho , no point what so ever, want the style of driving an XJS , then drive an XJS , in its original form ,
want an economical modern GT that runs on Derv, then buy one of them ,

If the wiring in that advert is any representation of the mechanical conversion I would advise running away very quickly and very far.

Heavens!
What could possibly go wrong?

The 2.2 diesel has more torque than the 5.3 V12
No it doesn't!
Torque from the MB 2.2 in OM611 form is 315Nm
Torque from 5.3 V12 in HE guise is 433Nm
It
would be a gutless conversion.

Al - I was referring to the Jaguar 2.2 diesel as fitted to the XF. Torque is 450NM I think.
Of course, the V12 HE has much more power and rather more panache!

Looking at the bonnet, it was originally a 3.6 not a V12. They are normally a fairly bullet proof engine so I wonder what caused it to expire. As the same engine was used in the XJ40, there are plenty of 2nd hand straight sixes about so why go to the effort of putting a diesel in it.
Rusty body, incomplete wiring, project, sorry if the owner is reading this but IMO it is scrap. Many much better XJS's available.

I'm pretty sure that same car was up for sale about a year ago.
I'm always disappointed that many owners don't consider that the underbonnet should look as good as the outside. I know that engine bays can be much more difficult to maintain, particularly on older cars with aged metal parts, but a good engine bay is a sight to behold.
I think the only worthy conversion to a straight-6 XJS is an XJR supercharged AJ16 engine.

The only engine conversion that I think would suit an XJS is the xjr super charged as mentioned above, or better still, adding twin turbos to the V12.
Makes me think... the 6.0 TWR engine already has forged pistons....
