the question is,

is a Heritage Certificate good value for money ?

i will set out my stall , :?

personally , so far i have resisted the urge to ' buy ' a heritage certificate , reason being, i dont think it is value of money for what it provides, which is…..a certificate with your car details on it…….

90% of this information is on your V5C , go look at it, Make ,Model , basic colour , Vin number, engine number, first registration date etc etc ,

now, i know this is probably controversial and blasphemy , but i dont think the heritage certificate gives you much for your £40 ?

and if you do have a heritage certificate , does it add value to your car ? ( i am inviting your comments ) , or does it say , i'm all original as i left the factory , just like a V5C does ?

if you swap out an engine, or gearbox, then there is no point in the Heritage certificate anyway , as your car isn't original by the numbers

do you get insurance discount by holding a heritage certificate… not that i know of ?

i dont doubt the admin and production cost of such a certificate, but is it money for old rope ?

for that point, how many do they produce each year ? and DO they make money on them at all ?

i like the idea of the certificate, but not at that price when the only thing they really provide is a build date i suppose

as i said above, i welcome your comments either way

BB

Err, it's worth whatever you're willing to pay for it. It doubt it has any resale value - I certainly wouldn't buy yours. It adds no value to a car, as it doesn't stop it rusting, make it go faster, or keep it cleaner. It might add value to a car's pedigree, if that's important and marketable, though most likely that sort of value comes from contacting previous owners.

That said, some people wish to collect a full history of a car they cherish; it's perfectly reasonable to value such things for sentiment. In that case you may well consider it worth the money.

It's the same as researching your family history - there's almost no marketable value in that, unless you have something sufficiently exciting to get "Who do you think you are?" interested, but lots of people will spend money on subscriptions to web sites and for copies of birth certificates.

For a small fee, if they still do it, the DVLA will give the keeper of a vehicle details of all previous owners and photocopies of previous registration documents.

If the car has had a number of previous keepers, it certainly helps to build the history. I've done this with both the XJ-S and Enfield. Some mileage was also noted, which was 'interesting' as it seems a good few thousand miles were lost during the first few years of the Jag's life :|

I have a cert. It did not tell me anything that I did not already know. However, I include it with my "evidence" when I submit my annual agreed valuation form for my Classic Car insurance.

From a resale perspective, it's a nice to have, just a full valet :)

all valid points of view, but is it worth £40 ?

or , as i think of £40......

one third of a tank of petrol to go and enjoy a drive on a sunny saturday morning

i do think a vehicle apraisal by a jaguar expert a valued certificate, but what the Heritage produce has no relation to the car it reports on , which could be a shed ??

I must say I agree. Most of the information is on the Log Book. I am the 3rd owner of my Jaguars so I know the previos owners details and I have wads of receipts etc. I dont think I will get anymore useful information from a certificate so I havent got any.

It is a bit of a gimmick, and the JH must make money from each one because if they didnt they wouldnt sell it.

A Heritage Certificat adds a bit of interest for the new owner thats all.
