running repairs

well , after a successful summer of driving and showing the XJS off there are a few running repairs to contend with , some big, some no so big,

when at the Southern day , i discovered my reverse lights would not turn off , as in they were on when driving forward etc, i quickly diagnosed it was the reverse light switch mounted under the ski slope in the gear selector frame, to get out of the problem quickly , i simply pulled the connector in the boot on the loom that goes onto the boot lid , but this did mean i lost the reverse lights totally ,and the number plate lights as well , but i wasnt doing any night time driving, so not an immediate issue ,

A quick scan of the Heritage site and a new switch was obtained for the grand sum of £8.50 , next day delivery as usual from my local HA Fox ,

so the other night after a glass of wine, i decided to have a go at replacing the switch , the ski slope came out nice and easy , and then i removed the gear selector surround , which is four 10mm nuts , and thats it , this exposes the reverse switch mounted in the frame , and as suspected the ball switch was stuck in , but popped out when i messed with it ,
removal is a POP , large spanner and a quarter turn , and then it undid by hand, three shims were used for spacing it off the selector arm , the new one fitted as easy as the old one came out using the original shims, but on testing the switch didnt operate correctly , so i whipped it out and removed one shim , put it back and hey presto , perfect operation

connected all the wiring back and popped the ski slope back in ,

another little job complete

We kid ourselves when we've finished the restoration and take to the road that it's job done! I've now come to regard my cars as ongoing restorations! I've even come to the point of getting cross because I think that I fixed something quite recently and it's gone wrong again but when I look back find that I first fixed it 10 years ago!
Painting the Forth bridge! :D

David,
You re so right, definatly an on going restoration. I've just replaced the header yet again, its now on tank no 3. So seems to have a twenty year life. I can't see me changing the next one cos I'll be nearly a hundred - Now there's a thought
