workshop manuals

Can anyone recommend a workshop manual that covers the 95 4.0 coupe? I bought one on ebay on CD which looks pretty good for service schedules and circuit diagrams but I am looking for idiot-proof step by step pictorial guides like the old faithful Haynes workshop manuals. Been to the Haynes site and it seems they don’t cover my model

There are three Original Jaguar Publications on CD, distributed by Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust.

The first is called "XJS - 1991 on, Service & Parts Manuals" Ref. No is JHM 1127. This covers all facelift XJSs

The second is called "Jaguar XJS 4.0 Litre Parts & Service Manuals 1991 - 1996" Ref. No is JHM 1143. This covers all facelift 4.0 XJSs and is focused on 4.0 litres but does have some stuff for V12s.

The third is called "XJS Supplementary Information - Model & Service Information 1975 - 1996" Ref No is JHM 1123. This might be the one that you've got.

They are all really useful publications. If you're going for one only, I'd go for the second one. Its's usually about £13 from JDHT

This as always is a difficult subject to balance between the way that Jaguar says a job should be done and the way many people/experts and enthusiasts have been doing it for many years. The Jag manual for me is however always a good place to start but this does need to be supplemented by the parts book. This helps enormously and for many is perhaps for helpful than the actual manual. If you are intending purchasing the CD version, my advice would be to avoid the dubious copies on ebay and buy direct from Jag/JDHT or other recognised outlet. Their prices are usually cheaper anyway.

There are some out there who place a great deal of faith in “Kirby’s” book, which of course is easily downloadable, but probably not very relevant to your model.

You can also of course gain a vast amount of technical know how from forums such as this one and by talking to the many independent experts out there most of whom are only too willing to pass on their knowledge.

CD Rom manuals

I guess I'm of an age where the CD Rom Parts/Service Manual just doesn't impress. Whilst Julia from JDHT tried to sing its praises, "just print off what you want, no more oil stained pages" etc. etc. I like to have the book there with me, open at the page. Since the Jag manual splits every job into about six operations all in different places its a pain in the proverbial printing it all off, and then you find you haven't got a bit so it's wash-up, back to the computer and so on. Also, is it me but is Adobe Reader a very User-Unfriendly system?
Having said that my "Genuine" service manual, hard-copy cost about £60 and that was a few years ago....tho I think Jaguar were guilty of a huge rip-off there.
Glad I got that off my chest! 8)

Bit peeved as it seems the genuine cd only runs on windows.
We run linux and despite my software engineer son trying to unlock the mysteries of the folders on the cd we have had no luck.
Will have to wait for second aero engineer son to get back from uni who has windows.
Be warned .
