Lidl and Aldi both give this a good push at Christmas time and very nice too, but let's get real: have been very fortunate this year to have a neighbour who starts making her Christmas cake in August, treating it with Martell 3 star at regular intervals, then adding the final marzipan and icing to bring it to final perfection. I must look as if I need a boost as one came to my door. Let's hope it is not just a one - off . Nice cakes can be bought at the Chatsworth shop where I am told they now cost £47, but the estate needs the money.

Hurry up - have just bought a slab from my local ALDI where it is being sold off at 98p - half price. The kettle is on and the tastebuds are working in anticipation The fruitcake above is long gone, so let's enjoy the last till next winter.

No more events to drive in the delightful lanes of the Lincs Wolds, autumn here and winter not far away, but TAKE HEART BB, the STOLLEN has arrived in Lidl in large slabs at £1-99, plus at the cashout ,for those who can't even make it home without a taste, small sized lumps in packets.
