Anyone want a car?

Well, after much welding, cursing, parts buying and soul-searching, I have decided to pull the plug on my Jaguar ownership. She's been off the road since Feb, and although she's a lovely car to drive, I'm no longer happy spending time and money on her.

The final straw for me was the petrol pouring out of the rear of the car after I'd had her jacked-up yesterday puzzling over my inability to bleed the brakes. Seems the smell of petrol in the cabin was because of a major hole somewhere on the tank.

Mechanically, she wasn't too bad, I'd solved the vaccuum issues which made the ECU run her too rich. I've even recently bought a new master-cylinder and two new front calipers for her at great ££££. But like all cars, the tin-worm has finally ground me down too much. After rebuilding the passenger-side front, I'm finding other parts of the body starting to go too.

If anyone is interested in taking her off my hands for parts, then contact me. I realise that I won't get much for her, but I'm only looking to get back some of the money I'd spent for the brake parts and other bits.

If you are interested, then email me. Note the car needs to be trailered away.

Car now sold. And for the first time in my life, I'm (probably) going to be owning a non-british sportscar. Seen in some circles as a rival to the XJS, anyone care to guess what I'm off to look at on Saturday?

Wullie : Fully intend on returning, probably in three or four years time. Next time I buy one, I'll have a much better idea of what to look out for!

SWF : Nope, guess again!!

Well, well ! Never had one, never wanted one. A German tank. Hope you're happy with it. Try driving on the Continent. Everyone stares at a Jaguar. The German stuff is just ignored. Hurry back to the Fold....

A 928 has been on my list of 'cars I must own one day' for years.

German tank eh? :? It's almost the same height and width as the Jag, but is 9" shorter and 200+ Kg lighter than the V-12 car, not bad for a tank!!!

Anyway: I like it, it doesn't rust (as much), its rarer (in manual form) and hey, each to their own!

Whatever happens, I'll be back in a Jag at some stage. Even when they aren't moving, they look fast! Just a pity mine didn't move more often!!!

You'll certainly have a better engine. The AJ6 3.6 is rather 'agricultural' by comparison to the later 4.0 and the V12 is not practical for economics. Any V8 is better than any straight 6. Don't know much about the 928 except never wanted one because of its bulbous looks. Hope you're not disappointed.

Hope you enjoy your 928, a friend at work had one for a year, he enjoyed owning it and driving it, your only here once.

SWF - You said "Any V8 is better than any straight 6."

In what way 'better'?

I was referring to the Jaguar V8 of recent years and the Porsche must be similar. I also have 1999 XK8 and Sovereign in V8 form and they leave the 1992 4.0 AJ6 for dead. That's my experience with recent V8s. I did have a Triumph Stag and an MGBGT V8 years ago, but these are ancient. I suppose to say all V8 is not strictly true as the older ones don't match up to to the AJ6 or AJ16.

For smoothness a straight 6 is inherently better than a V8. This is an interesting topic - good information here
