I`ve had success previously posting images on my Forum gallery using a fast image resizer to reduce what I assume is pixel density.

Could someone answer this question please?

My digital camera has "M" settings from 10 down to 1 and some sort of pixel volume guide which as far as I can understand it, implies a reduction in pixelation the lower the setting goes. Presumably 10 would equate to 10mega pixel definition, 3 to 3mega pixel etc etc. Picture quality degrades as the figure lowers. When set to level 1M on the camera, the shown pixel sizes appear to be similar to the requirement of our Galleries. Am I correct in my assumption.

Taking things further, would it be better for gallery pictures taken on my camera to be originated on the 1M setting, thus avoiding the need to use the resizer on my computor?

Any advice appreciated.

As a norm, I set the camera to 3M which produces pictures of around 3oo-8ookb. Typically I use that size for sending on e-mail, as quality is quite reasonable and uploading times are tolerable. It is also the size that I`ve been sending Nigel for his inclusion with copy script for the S-type Forum pages. Some pictures however do fall apart slightly if Nigel edits and expands them further. The situation gets worse if I`ve already edited the original pics, prior to sending them to him.

This IT stuff is a huge learning curve on occasions.

Cheers Boys. Nice BB your have going. Trying to get mine to the same volume and quality. Thanks for letting me chip in.

Did this camera come with an instruction book or are you reserving your male right not to read it?

My understanding of it is that if you multiply the 1000 x 750 pixels required for upload to the gallery you have a total of 750000 pixels, about 3/4 of a megapixel by your camera's definition. By editing your photos you increase the file size because each edit or modification adds to the file size. The change you make is an additional layer of data that gets added to the file. I'm not an expert so if someone more knowledgeable knows differently we will both learn something.

Thanks guys.

Interesting. The camera manual is rather vague about M settings. It just says how to set the levels but not the technicalities of what happens. Rather frustrating.

Appreciate your comments. Have learned something tonight.

if you are using a PC with any version of Windows, it should have the application Paint installed.

This can be used to resize an image to anything you want. It can also crop the image (as in cut off the unwanted bits,) add text, erase unwanted bits, &c. It's not a neat application and I don't use it myself but it allows you to take the best quality pictures and then downgrade them as required for BB use or whatever.

There are other applications, both freeware and commercial that will do the job also.

Thanks Al,

I wasn`t aware of the Paint facility. I`ll give that a go.

I`ve used a free fast image resizer found on google previously but using it is something of a learning curve. As with many aspects of IT, many do not have tutorials, so at that point it is down to experimentation.

I suppose being a self taught guy with no formal IT training, this could be part of the problem!

Quite frankly, this sort of stuff is akin to giving me a grenade with the pin removed. Sooner or later, bo bloom..... End of a problem!!!

Appreciate your input.

Very impressed with the content of this Forum. Great place to visit.

Kind regards.

Mike.

Hello Tony,

Camera is a 3 year old 10.1 Casio EX-Z1060. Now a tired old heap used for the greasy stuff. Transfer of data images via SD card into laptop card reader.

My newish Samsung replacement is a cheap and cheerfull 10.1 P1000 model.

Neither guide books or cd downloads give the more advanced data which we have previously discussed on these postings.

Hi Mike

Tired old heap does have a good selection of options in terms of image size as you previously indicated. Although 10Mp max resolution it can reduce image size by JPEG Compression through at least fifteen 4:3 image sizes! Shooting at the lower values should not increase file size as strictly speaking this is not an "edit", rather the camera will average out adjacent pixels to reduce the total to the selected size at capture.

Whether it is better to do this in camera or later is debateable.

Personally I would always shoot at the max. possible file size (ie 10M Fine) given sufficient memory, as you can always reduce the file but you can never replace lost detail (resolution) after the moment is gone. You never know what you may want to do with that image.
If you have a good image re-sizer that is quick and easy I think this is the way to go.

Tony
