Has anyone had a go at ,
Wrestling out the windscreen.
The rubber on my car is old and has gone hard, so it is now not gripping the bright work on the outside at the bottom corners.

Also I suspect it is/was the cause of the problem of water getting in and making paddling pools in the foot wells.
This would seem has been going on for a long while, with the previous owners, as i have had to chop ou and replace some of the floor due to the rot caused by water settling in the floor.
And then being kept nice and moist with a soggy carpet/ underpadding material.

So what i was toying with doing was, cutting out the old rubber, to remove the glass more easily.
Clean up and check body around window opening, then fit a new rubber with hopefully the intact removed screen.
So has anyone had a go at this and how did you get on, and how did you do it?
P.S. is there any bonding/sealant used in conjuction with the window rubber>?

getting out the windscreen isnt too bad , putting back in a little harder to do yourself......

first, remove the chrome trims

the first ones are the wide side uprights, these are pop riveted to the body behind the door seal rubber by the front quarter lights , gently pull the trim uprights away from the rubbers, it will be a little tough , as they are pushed in quite a way into the seams , be careful not to bend them, as they are NLA from Jaguar

then you will see the top chrome has a screw at each end that was tucked under the side trims, there will be a black plastic sleeve on the ends under the screws , to stop rattles and to finish i think....

then you will need to remove the windscreen wiper grill section to access the lower chrome trim screws, these are located in the fold over section into the wiper well at the bottom of the screen

now all the chrome has gone, you need to get a craft knife, and cut away the rubber laying on the windscreen, do it from the inward side and cut outwards exposing the glass

with all the rubber cut away gently push the screen from the inside, it will pop out , it is large and heavy, but can be lifted clear from one side , be sure not to ding it when putting it down as it will shatter into a million pieces

the rest of the rubber can be pulled scraped away until the area is clean , there will be some sort of residue from the original screen fitting, but its probably gone like putty by now, as mine had

if fitting the original screen, then all you need is a new screen seal kit, this is the screen seal and a rubber wedge section, the wedge section is put in after the screen and seal have been ' stringed ' into place , the wedge section locks in the rubber by forcing everything together, a special tool is needed for this and possibly some sealant is needed

then refit all the chrome trims , the top one is the hardest, as its easily bent.........

a brand new screen from Jaguar is £180, screen rubber kit around £60 depending on where you get it from

i have heard and read of aftermarket seal kits not fitting correctly and ever sealing ,

a screen fitter will charge between £70 and £100 to refit the screen , and are usually insured, so will replace the screen if they break it,

hope this helps

Thanks very much for the post BB,
Don't think i will tackle that job at the mo, my solution 4 now will be that we only go out when its not raining for now.

I have seen a screen seal for the car for 30 quid, so think i will order it and have a go at fitting it some time in the future.

i think my body work and suspension will kep me busy enough for now.
With a bit of luck i might get a chance at putting my anti roll bar bushes on tomoro,

Ta again Paul B.

BB, it will only shatter into a million pieces if it's a toughened screen. Laminated screens will crack.
