parts unavailability.....brake bleed screws....

yup,

went into Jag to order some new brake bleed nipples,
Quote " we only sell one type, they will fit your XJS " part number C2C-8362

so a few days later the parts come in, and guess what.....they didnt fit

after some research i find that the nipples supplied ( which really are the only ones they supply ) are 10mmx1

unfortunately , after a lot of research , i find that mine, and may other earlier Jags take 3/8 UNF bleed nipples

Jaguar dont supply these anymore ????????????

a quick search on the net, i find a local company ( BIGG RED )that refurbish all brands of brake calipers, a quick phone call and they assure me they can supply what i need, so i bought six of them, well...... less than twelve hours later they drop on the door-mat , and are perfect for the calipers

c'mon Jaguar , its a basic service item, how many thousands of Jags still require these parts ????

BTW , they were less than £1.80 each , Jaguar charged me £4.80 for one, the wrong one......

Frustrating isn't it?

I had a not dissimilar experience at the parts counter of my local Jaguar agent with exhaust clamps a while back. Fortunately I was able to convince them there and then that the part (which was correct according to their computer) wouldn't fit and to get one which would.

I think if the car is more than 10 years old Jaguar have washed their hands of it. Jag Classic Parts are distinctly patchy and can be astronomically expensive. Sharp contrast to Volvo who can supply almost every part for my wife's 16 year old 850 estate within 24 hours.

Pity.

Yeah I think this is something that affects the majority of our wonderful British motor heritage. I have the same problem with my Maestro Vanden Plas - mostly if I go to Rover Parts to get something I need, I get "Sorry mate it's NLA - no longer available". It's a bit of a problem when it's a front anti-roll bar bush that you need because the retaining shaft has sheared and you need a replacement for MoT.

Thankfully in most cases a bit of searching digs up the right part from a third party supplier but it can be a real problem which leads to a much lighter wallet and lots of had scratching in many cases.

Still - I guess it's part of the whole ownership experience with these cars and maybe it means that more of them end up in enthusiast's hands at a reasonable price because Joe Bloggs can't be bothered to get them repaired.
