Recently in the JEC magazine, Ebay and generally, it comes perhaps as no surprise just how cheap some xjs's are being advertised for. I suppose with a combination of the credit crunch, low mpg and the general non-political correctness of owning a larger engined car it is understandable.
Things however move in circles, I remember when E Types (and C Types come to that), were in a similar position. The shame is that some very good cars will be broken or scrapped for a comparatively minor fault.
I suspect there are a few members here considering just such a fate for their cars. I would appeal that if that is the case perhaps they can find a way of storing it under SORN conditions until things get better.
Also for anyone with suitable dry storage capacity, perhaps this would be a good time to speculate for the future?

you are right in what you say, the the de-valuing of any car has a knock on effect , which can be positive
the cars drop to a value that makes them expensive to run and uneconomical to repair, so they are scrapped , even for minor faults,
this takes a lot of cars out of the loop, so in ten years time, the cherished and surviving cars increase in value due to their scarcity , if you see what i mean
if every E-type that as made was still on the road, would they fetch the same price as todays cars ? .......i doubt it
so what i'm saying ( in a round about way ) is that every car that gets scrapped has the potential to improve the value of the remaining cars by its very destruction...

that said, i would not relish having to scrap any car or merit....

In my honest (but humble) opinion...
You gets what you pay for! XJ-S's in genuine good condition are rare already these days. From what brief observations I have, expect to pay around half of the pre-agreed insurance valuation in current market conditions. That's still going to be around £4K - £5K for a pre-facelift...
Trash XJ-S's could be very handy for parts. If I had the space, I'd deffo buy a second one especially for those expensive chrome and trim bits.
Rich.

£5K should easily get you a "good" XJ-S or XJS. These days for a daily driver I would stick with an XJS on balance.
