Is one a Fake

Postby MichaelSB » Sun Nov 10, 2019 5:40 pm

I decided to give Rosie’s AJ16 engine an oil and filter change today, as is my way I always pre-fill the oil filter before fitting it to the car, it doesn’t make much mess and the oil pressure comes up immediately
Today when I pre-filled the new jaguar branded filter it barely allowed any oil into it.
Thinking that was odd I pre-filled a second new spare filter I had and as in the past it took quite a time and quite an amount of oil, having seen at my local Merc parts dept warnings about Fake parts including Oil Filters after I completed the oil change I decided to cut open the old oil filter and the suspect one to compare the insides as the outside branding and numbers are identical.
Well they are very different inside, I have taken a couple of photos for comparison and if I can post them on here I will as a cautionary warning to others that just because it says jaguar it doesn’t prove it is.

Hi Michael,

This is both interesting and worrying.

Can I suggest that you retain the parts and get in contact with Rob Jenner. Rob will need to take this up with Jaguar who may well want to see the items. Can you remember where you purchased the two filters?

There has been a large surge in fake motoring parts over the past few years. The most notable I remember being NGK Spark plugs where there are so many fake ones that NGK actually produced material showing the most common ways of identifying the fake plugs. As with the plugs, fake filters can be terminally damaging to the engine. This is the first time I've heard of fake Jaguar parts, so we all need to be vigilant.

It will be interesting to hear of Jaguar's response to this.

Cheers

Hi Paul
I hope there aren’t too many fake jag parts as the damage that could be caused would not be good, I Don’t think I know Rob Jenner but you are welcome to pass on my contact details which you already have and if he wants the parts/info I am happy to provide it
Thanks
Michael

Michael,

Rob's going to look at this thread when he gets back from the NEC. He'll then contact you as necessary. Can you keep the stripped filters for now, please?

Can you also let us all know where you purchased the two filters, especially the presumed fake one?

Cheers

Michael - have you check to see if your inbox is full? You can only get up to 50 (I think) before you need to start deleting old ones

Update, I should have pointed out that the filter with 19 written on it in felt pen is the one I believe to be a fake, if it isn’t it is certainly very different inside to the other filter which had been on my car for 12 months.
