XJ-S factory fitted sunroof? Did they ever fit them?

Hi everybody, and Happy Easter!
I have a 1986 XJ-S coupe, Canadian spec. parts car. It is fitted with an electric sunroof, that is made of toughened, tinted glass, with an internal, metal 'louvered' closing panel.
I have only ever seen this type of sunroof fitted to XJ-S's OR of course, the WEBASTO type canvas sunroof, with the manual retractable panel.
I have been 'challenged' by one of out American 'cousins', that the factory only fitted METAL sunroofs to these models, and that the dimensions were as follows:- 17.25x32.25 INCHES
My point is that I was not aware of the factory EVER fitting sunroofs to these models. I am ready to admit my error if there is anybody out there that can shed light on this matter.
Thanks
Phil

Phil,

There are certainly some XJSs fitted from new with metal electric sunroofs. I don't know the dimensions, but I've seen at least two cars with them fitted.

And in the 80's, electric tilt/slide glass sunroofs were available fitted from new on XJSs. Nearly all of the parts are unavilable new now, but the prts listings still quote all the part numbers for the glass roof installations.

Hope that helps,

Paul

Hi Paul,
Were these fitted at the factory or were they dealer installed? I can't ever remember them being factory fitted, but I am not as good at remembering as I used to be!

i have an '89 coupe, and the decoded vin shows it had a glass sunroof fitted from new at the factory ,

as above, if you look in the jaguar XJS parts-book, the back pages show all the sunroof components ,

if you dont have a book, then visit the JDHT parts online site

http://www.jdht.com

and you will find it in the accessories section

Phil,

BB's post seems to definitely confirm that they were fitted at factory. It seems that they could be retro-fitted by dealers as well as one could buy the "sunroof kit". Have a look at the Jaguar Classic Parts website and you can see the individual part numbers as well as the "kit" number.

Click to go to Jaguar Classic Parts link

BB,

If you get a moment, could you just drop me a pm sometime re the decoded VIN. I wasn't aware that you could work out things such as sunroofs. Tks.

it wasnt so much of a VIN decode, but a Jaguar dealership brought up the list of original spec optional extras fitted against the VIN , this was custom specified by the original owner

things like the sports pack , alloys and sunroof are detailed on such a list,

i have list for my XJ8 to....heated seats, custom seat piping ,alloys ,rear compartment cigar lighter , tool kit . power-fold/heated mirrors etc above and beyond the basic specification for a Sovereign

( i wish he had forked out for a heated screen to, but you cant have everything, lol )

a friendly dealer can easily supply such a list , for free

Best to all!

Dear All

On a general note I've always wondered why you would fit a sunroof in a car with air-con..........is it because the original XJS interior was found to be a bit dark and gloomy?
I've previously found that a lighter colour replacement headlining has improved the ambience of the interior no end.

BB
Glad to hear you have a rear ciggy lighter........when I get a trip out in your motor I can relax in the back with a smoke..........

Paul, is it possible for you to compress that url into a link like THIS ONE as it makes the text scroll wider then the screen making posts very difficult to read.
Sorry to be a pain!

Hi everyone,
Just thought I would give you the final outcome for our American cousin. He has decided that the roof is NOT factory, and that is that!

Another example I think, of American entente cordiale, and their readiness to accept opinions from other nationalities!

Tata for now!
