I'm not too sure about leaving a XJS out in the elements. We are talking mild steel and limited / no galvanisation protection in most cases especially pre-facelift examples. Mine would most likely have rusted to pieces years ago had it sat outside all year, not to mention UV damage to the interior. The XJ40 is suffering from this (and rust) as it lives outside all year. With the XJS, when it rains or the car washed, water often collects in awkward to access places that are difficult to dry out. As such, repeated exposure will unfortunately lead to rust if not kept in check. Breathable covers used indoors are fine, but there is a duty of care to put a dry, waxed or detailed clean car under it. Personally I have used an indoor cover with an outdoor cover on the XJS in my garage with some dehumidifying tablets inside the cabin and boot. This arrangement has worked fine the last 10 years. My biggest challenge is the bumper chrome work which is not as smooth as it was 10 years ago - so at some point some re-chroming work will be required.
I don't doubt that some vehicles have incurred damage through the use of covers, but I'd suspect that this could be more with outdoor covers (I use one on the CLK) and very wet/damp cars and/or cars with poor paint / lacquer condition as there is more scope for things to go wrong.
