Strange Problem

This evening on my way to work (5 miles) my car behaved very strangely and i was wondering if anyone knew what it was....

I was at the traffic lights and the rev counter died although the engine was still running, i could here a small amount off popping from the exhaust. I turned her off and re-started and still no rev counter, so i pulled over (30m max) and turned her off again. Opened the bonnet, couldn't see anything (too dark) so shut it and re-started the car again. This time no problem so i continued my journey and everything was as smooth as usual. Same on the way home! Mystery to me, please help!
