Sorry i didnt make it to cadwell.
Well, after the off roading at Mallery i have a broken gearbox.
Now, the logical thing to do is fit another gearbox, but thats far too simple for me! I have decided that what i really need is the 4 speed auto, this has a different bolt pattern so i 'have to' fit the 6 litre engine to go with it.
Do you see where this is starting to go wrong...
So i turn to good old ebay and duly buy a rusty xj40 v12, remove engine and box (struth its heavy, 435kg!) and also keep the rear hubs and drive shafts for an outboard disk conversion.
The neighbors are slightly concened that the bac garden is turning into a breakers yard!
Well, i have just got the 6L engine and box 'in' the XJ-S, you will probably bot be suprised to hear it doesnt really fit. Mostly because the gearbox is about 4 inches longer than the old 3 speed jobby. Also the Marelli ignition, 36cu and gearbox controll ecu seem to have far more wires than they really need! As yet i have no wiring diagrams, but that never stoped me in the past....
So, Oulton park is looking iffy, Silverstone is a must though and i am already booked to do the Nurbergring race in september!
All i have to do now is re-plumb the cooling system (why doesnt the heater matrix fit any more), shorten the prop shaft (or find a pukka 6L one), weld in the lambda bosses in the exhaust, wire the engine and box into the 20 year old electrics, adapt the gear selector (must retain the period look), make an intake system, make a gearbox cooler, adapt the pas pump, fit the outboard rear brakes, fit new brake pads and race fluid, service everything and knock the dents out of the front wing.
So that leaves sunday free then.....
As hobbies go, i sometimes think stamp collecting would be easier.
Cheers
Ralph (the ever hopefull)
