Babs and Pendine beach

As I reported in another thread, I was recently in South West Wales. I had promised myself for a long time to visit Pendine beach, which was used for the World land speed records between 1924 and 1927.

There is a small museum here that holds the car named 'Babs' in which Parry Thomas tragically lost his life on 3rd March 1927 whilst trying to retain the speed record, the car was buried in the sand dunes until being eventually recovered and rebuilt to running condition again. A fascinating story which is explained in great detail in the museum.

On the way there to break the journey up, I had a great run from Brynamman to Llangadog over the Black Mountains with a summit of 2030 ft (604m) A fantastic winding mountain road and while it has a 40mph limit, that is plenty to enjoy this spectacular road. There is a viewpoint at the top at the old quarries although with mountain mist blowing around visibility was limited. Five minutes after taking the photo below, the car disappeared in the mists. It was a good job I didn't wander away too far!

I had hoped to also visit the nearby Cefn Coed Colliery museum but it is closed at the moment, never mind, it gives me an excuse to go again some other time.

I learnt to drive on Pendine Sands when I was 13 in my dads Hillman Imp, and the following year in our first Vauxhall Viva. Happy Days :D
