Re: Should I keep it?
Ah, but you are forgetting the postage!
I can't believe some of the prices that are being charged for basically simple things.
I know that it is a sellers market and they have to make money but there has to be a cut off point somewhere.
I need the window switch escutcheon (that doesn't look right but it's the bit that the switches sit in) for my car because it is buggered and 'post glued'. The cheapest one that I can find is £25 and that has a broken tang. Plus postage.
That is ridiculous; it's a 3 inch by 2 inch piece of plastic with 2 holes in it for crying out loud; it does not cost £25 to anybody.
This is simple usurey (again, that doesn't look right but I think that you get my drift).
These sellers don't seem to realise that they are pushing people away with their idiotic prices.
They would not exist if it wasn't for the root enthusiasts attempting to keep (or the newbies trying to start to keep) our favourite vehicles on the road.
The cheaper their prices are the more people will buy the bits and the more of our cars that will stay on the road.
And the more cars that stay on the road the more bits that will be needed.
For years and years and years.
And they can keep selling the bits for years and years and years.
Simples.
On a lighter note, I am very pleased with my Ebay purchase of 4 carbon fibre (maybe) tyre valve caps with Jaguar logo and key ring mounted spanner to lock them in.
£9.50 including postage, arrived the next day.
Bargain.

Re: Should I keep it?
My local Jaguar dealership is a 90 mile round trip; I prefer the postage!
Re: Should I keep it?

Much to the bemusement of my wife and my colleagues in the mailroom at work, my parts have begun to arrive. Including and not limited to the above. I've gone for thicker type f gearbox fluid after much research and decided to go with braided brake hoses and change the water pump on a 'while I'm there' basis. Same with the timing change bung. Already changed the oil, fitted four new genuine jag wheel bearings and stainless downpipe studs with new gaskets so no more leaks!.
Managed to find the special champion spark plugs for the XJR-S online in Germany. I got 10 delivered for £28, then got the last two from DMG for £16!!! Crazy. Found genuine jaguar discs for £80 (145 from jaguar) and the rear diff pinion seal for £25 (39 or there about from jaguar) genuine jaguar pollen filters for £14, full set of genuine belts for £18, I like to shop around. And I really like a bargain.
I've already got 10mm performance leads, washable airfilters, brake pads, handbrake pads, deionised water + decent coolant, caliper rebuild kits, reasonable replica quad pipe rear boxes.
Also picked up from Jaguar a full set of coolant hoses, thermostats + gaskets, gearbox filter/gasket, fuel filter and will be ordering a distributor cap and arm as soon as I can tell them precisely which one I want as my records say a Lucas and theirs a marelli!
So I am pretty much flat broke now. And one of my neighbours has put their 4 bed house on the market and my wife (quite seriously) would like to upgrade (me too!) So I best get this car done pronto.

Re: Should I keep it?
a man after my own heart ,
can't resist an ebay bargain either, lol
that little lot should keep you busy for a while, and you will feel a lot better about driving the car once its all fitted , as this kind of rolling maintenance keeps them in fine fettle for so much longer ,
i usually spend about £100 every two months, and even if i dont need anything ' now ' i buy parts for the future if they are a bargain

Re: Should I keep it?
I probably spend far more than that. At least double. I do have three cars though in my defence. Though I do sell more than I spend most months. I have collected so many parts over the years so I am downsizing.

Re: Should I keep it?
Well, she finally went in for an MOT. After a full service. Whole exhaust off, down pipe studs replaced with stainless items. Rad out, cleaned out, water pump replaced, (proactive change), full set of new genuine Jag water hoses, (couple were on the way out!) and new heater valve. New rare Champion Plugs (no longer made), uprated leads, dizzy cap + arm, belts, fluids + filters. Including Gearbox filter + upgrade to Type F fluid (slightly harder changes for a better box life apparently). Four new genuine wheel bearings. IRS off, braided brake hoses all around, new genuine rear disks + handbrake pads and EBC brake calliper pads. Rebuilt callipers with new seals/pistons. Diff pinion seal + fluid change including LSD additive. Little welding and some new bulbs.
And?
She failed….!
One of the rebuilt callipers was leaking. Upon removal, unfortunately it appears the bore was too corroded and pitted around the piston seal for a simple swap out for new parts like that. So I’ve bought a refurbished replacement to fit, arriving tomorrow. So watch this space.
I’m often quite grumpy about MOT failures, especially when it’s something trivial or boarder line. For once, I’m really happy it failed on this. Can’t mess around with brakes.

Re: Should I keep it?
Aaarrrgh!
So I bought a replacement caliper. Wrong side arrived. Swapped it for a refurb caliper which the courier left with a neighbour but didn't leave a card to say so... More delays!
So it's all back together and ready to roll for the second time... Just torquing everything up....Only to be followed up by the radius arm captive nut letting go.
Why oh why?! I want my car back!!

Re: Should I keep it?

Ahh gonna have to cut it open to replace the nut. It's torquing up, but doesn't feel right. Feels stiff rather than tight. This is a pretty darn important point, so we're gonna do it properly.

Re: Should I keep it?
I don't suppose it's cross threaded......? If you're lucky a suitable tap could rescue the situation. Assuming the threads are still OK this bolt is lockwired rather than having a locking captive isn't it?

Re: Should I keep it?
Yeah we've drilled it and tapped it. Trouble is now, it's not tightening, rather 'stiffening'. You know that feeling when you think a bolt is about to sheer off?
So I'd rather replace it and do it properly, after all, this car isn't exactly a lightweight or a slouch. And will be... ahem... 'driven'

Re: Should I keep it?
So…. We have an MOT!
We didn’t have to cut the floor in the end. We actually had Paul Brackley (the chap off Wheeler Dealers who does all the work behind the scenes) come down and have a look at it. Swapped out for an M12, drilled and tapped and works a treat thank goodness!
Only issue now is terrible idling and cutting out once warm. Down to a dodgy Auxiliary Air Valve (or extra air valve as Jaguar seems to call it). As they are £298, we’re taking some of the advice in Kirby Palm’s book to repair it. A mixture of hot/cold water to shock it back into action, then a self tapping screw into the top of the piston in one of the holes and copious amounts of wd40 and some long nose pliers to loosen up the sticky piston. Popping it up and down a few hundred times to clean the build up out.
With any luck, that should fix it. I want my car back! I can see the light at the end of the tunnel now. I’ve just renewed the tax and insurance for September too, so now all there is left to do is enjoy it! Hopefully I’ve covered myself for at least the next year of trouble free motoring. <reaches and touches some veneer>
Just a few final bits I’d like to do. Change the steering rack, as I’ve managed to find another XJR-S uprated rack to refurb and fit, save having the car taking up space in a workshop whilst my existing rack is fixed. Re-lacquer the wheels, with the house move, I’ve decided I don’t want to pay for a refurb now and then drive on them all winter. Re-lacquer the ski-slope, assuming I can strip the old surface off without damaging the wafer thin veneer. I’d like some new mats and a new headlining too. But some of this might wait till after Christmas.
