Thanks Paul
It's a long time since I've had the pleasure of a V12 so I've forgotten loads.
Yes, the filter is tied to the left hand brace although not very securely to the dizzy; it fell off when I touched it. Mind you it is hard to see anything under the bonnet due to the amount of red Devon dust that covers everything!
Talking of forgetting loads, where is the take off for the oil pressure gauge located? I want to put a manual gauge on to check the pressure as the drum gauge is stuck.

Steve,

You can view the details of all the cabriolets that have been entered by members as part of their membership details.

Just go to Vehicle Register from the top of this page, select "XJS", then "View XJS Register", then just select the arrow on "body style" and it will sort all the entries, grouping the cabriolets together.

Have you updated your own record with your new cabriolet, Steve?

Hi Paul
I did try to update but unfortunately I didn't have the paint and trim codes with me so I couldn't do it. I'll do it over the weekend along with checking out the wheel reference number and checking the weather forecast to see if I can take it out for a spin without the rear roof section fitted!
If I drive fast enough the rain should just blow over the targa panels and onto the boot.

It does have non-working cruise control though.
Steve
A common problem. It can be a vacuum leak with the bellows, knackered cruise control or resume switch, or the speed control unit potentiometers that need adjusting (located above passenger foot-well).

Ok, I've checked the wheels and they are Fondmetal 7J x 15 H2 E20
2012-05-19 006.JPG
They are also stamped 2800/E3 KBA 40810.

Steve

Based on my records that is a Fondmetal wheel for the XJS and should carry a 235 X 60 /15 tyre. I can't tell you whether it was a factory or dealer option without further research but certainly it has been fitted to the XJS in the past, pjts probably knows!

Sportspack cars had two shims in the steering rack (JLM1458, in the fitting kit JLM1459, along with new wheel studs) supplied with the (non-standard) wheels which limited the lock in towards the inner arch - they replaced the standard tab washer on the track rod ends. If your car was not fitted with these wheels from new or by a dealer as an aftermarket fit, then it is possible that it does not have these shims, this would allow the wheels to foul the arch.

That's an impressive working knowledge of wheels there Tony! I would never have identified that level of detail from the wheel stamp.

I still think that it will be difficult to source 235/60 R15 tyres. If no luck, then Fleebay always seem to have a number of 15" 6.5J Jaguar lattice refurbished wheels at reasonable money to take a 225/60 R15 tyre option, else there's the 16" upgrade option already mentioned.

As I say, there is nothing wrong with the wheels and I need to spend my money on other things (like petrol!).
What I need to know is will a 225/60/15 tyre (readily available) safely fit a 7J rim or do I have to go wider and lower?

Steve,

I can't give you a definitive answer, but all the reference tables that I've seen say that a 225/60 15 tyre can be fitted to wheel rim widths of 6J to 8J. Therefore the Fondmetal 7J rims would seem to be fine.

As an example, 225/60 16 tyres were fitted to 7J rims on XJSs which would seem to corroborate that.

I'm sure a quick call to your tyre supplier would confirm things.

Good luck with your decision!

How about these?

Don't know if they're in stock, but worth a call.

Good try Tony but unfortunately they no longer exist:
[So for the benefit of others who search,
citytyre.co.uk
was registered on 24/11/2008
and filed as dormant on 24/09/2010.]
I think I'll go with the 225 option once I have spoken to a tyre person.
Thanks for all the input guys.

Steve m,
I have a request in at the moment with my local Formula 1 auto service shop for XJS 5.3L tyres and he will let me know tomorrow after the jubilee holiday. He is checking with their warehouse.
F1 tell me that Pirelli 235/60R15 98W tyres are still listed in their catalogues @ £187.00 each. I turned my nose up at that price, so they are researching all other usable brands. It seems there qite a few budget brands out there if you know whre to look.

One of the F1 suggestions is a budget brand from Goodyear called Marshall which apparently retails @ £87.50 each fitted balanced and a with new valve all in the price. Failing that they have tyres in 225/60R15 98W in stock at their warehouse.

I will let you know how I get on with this in the near future.

Steve m,

I have now bought a pair of Avon ZZ3 tyres, sized 225/60R15 96W, for the front of my XJS5.3L Convertible today from Formula 1 Autocentre for £95.00 each, fitted with new valves and balanced. Plus £40.00 for a tracking check. The new tyres will be fitted on Friday, so I will keep my fingers crossed and hope they are long lasting.

These Avon tyres were chosen because I trusted their name rather than that of Marshal, which is said to be an offshoot of Goodyear and priced at £87.50 each all in.

According to F1, the Pirellis are still made in the 235/60R15 96W size but they do not have them in stock in their warehouse. The Pirelli 225/60R15 96W tyres retail at £187.00 each all in, which is a bit too rich for me at this time.

I know tyres have a date code and in theory have a time life, but if some P600s were found and stored out of the daylight and wide temperature fluctuations I wonder how many years they would last before being considered of no use.

I've been offered a couple off a XJ-S going for scrap that are almost new.

225s are fine, I had them before I changed to P600s a few years ago. You will notice the speedo and mileometer will be out a bit though.

I've ordered a couple of the Avon ZZ3s from F1 in Poole for fitting on Saturday so we'll see how they go. Slightly more expensive than you paid Brian at £110 advertised although they did honour their price check guarantee when I found them cheaper at National Tyres (although not in stock) at £107. I also opted for the free tracking check and safety check (probably not the wisest move!).
I've been using the Renovo treatment on the cabriolet hood and I must say that the change is startling; it almost looks new now. I'll post some before and after pictures once I have finished the treatment.
