I'm quite addicted to viewing YouTube, far more entertaining then most normal TV. There is a fair bit of XJS content, mainly reviews etc.

I'm wondering if members would consider making some content, all you need is a simple camera and a bit of enthusiasm. I'm sure the rest of us would enjoy it, in fact I'm a bit suprised that the club hasn't used it already as it would be good promotion and if done professionally could be an income stream.

I have had a few very amateur attempts over the years but nothing of note on the car so I will spare you the misery of proving a link

If you have already some content post the link, it would be great to see.

Good plan Pop!

I've been creating a very amateurish YouTube channel, and there's a good bit of XJ-S content on it:

https://www.youtube.com/@SBOReeves/videos

(Also a fair amount of guitar playing but you can skip that bit!)

I shall be using this one next year for my front suspension rebuild: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UB_Ubt3fjHg&t=30s

During my rear suspension project this year, this guy's videos have been entertaining and useful:

There's also quite a lot of Jag content on this guy's channel: https://www.youtube.com/@HighPeakAutos/videos - always an enjoyable watch.

Clean MOT pass today :D , I'm quite chuffed that the last advisory was 15 years ago!
As the road fund licence goes up to £325 from Saturday I might wait till May as I will be tied up with other things in April.

A result! Someone mentioned that I could tax it from 1st April whilst still in March, so I taxed it today for £295, saved £30 which will go towards some petrol for it!

Congrats on the MoT pass, Pop - and playing the tax system to your advantage!

If all goes to plan, I shall be putting mine in for an MoT at the end of the month and will have fixed the only thing that was advised last year, hopefully nothing else has cropped up in the 1,000 or so miles that I drove it since the last one!

I'm planning a video for the spring which involves driving over a camera.

The XJ-S has a fairly low ground clearance so I've been testing a few things. I'm not taking a chance with my iPhone, so dusted off my old Canon camera. The question is Did it survive?

Given the soundtrack, I was expecting a Rover rather than a Jaguar :-)

Or a Lotus Seven :)
For my actual video, the camera will have to survive the XJS passing over it at, hopefully, 60mph. May have to be 40mph as that is the limit in the New Forest where it will be based. It may be a one take shot!
A straight bit of road will be called for, free of other traffic, so I may need a bit of help. Anyone nearby willing to help early on one Sunday morning next year? I know a farmer with long straight stretch of private drive that I might also be able to use but it's a bit rough.
All suggestions are welcome.

One of the possible locations, which many will recognise, the main runway of RAF Stoney Cross (as was)
The video will document the 12 wartime airfields of the New Forest combined with road safety involving mainly the ponies of the forest.

It would be great if anyone who has an interest in either the airfields or the forest in general gets in touch with me and would like to be involved.

I'd worry that the car's suspension and aerodynamics might make it sink or bounce lower and shave the top off the camera. If it's of significant value, you might consider something either cheaper or smaller - surveillance cameras, or web- or dash-cams spring to mind.

Also, there's a possibility of the airflow sucking the camera up into the chassis as the car passes over - I'm not an aerodynamicist, so I don't know if that's spurious.

Hi Alan,

I recognised the old runway at Stoney Cross immediately as I more or less grew up in the New Forest. My grandparents lived in the village of Hale, only about 7 miles by road from the old airfield and I'd take any opportunity to stay with them and go for long walks with my grandad - halcyon days! I love how you can still see the width of the old runway because no gorse grows for several yards out from the road side, and if you get out and walk around a bit, you can still find runway lights here and there, as well as the copper cabling. Another favourite wartime relic in that area is the Ashley bombing range at Telegraph Hill, alongside Roger Penny Way. There is still quite a lot to be seen there including shelters and the original target marks on the ground. I've got a bit of shrapnel that my grandad found there many years ago - it's not very big but is incredibly heavy for what it is. There's no way of knowing what it came from, but it could be a bit of Barnes-Wallis's finest!

Have you got one of these books: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/141911278078 - essential reading!

I'd love to get down to the forest to give you a hand and it's not entirely impossible as I must owe you a favour for your help with my Jag suspension rebuild. I think the way I'd do it is to create a little metal jig to hold an old Android phone at the correct angle to film the car's approach from the middle of the road using the front camera, turn it around and do a second pass to film the car driving over and away - then splice the two bits of footage together. I reckon I could probably supply the jig and an old phone as well if needed. As you say, the New Forest National Park has a 40 mph speed limit throughout, so I'm not sure you'll be able to find a spot to exceed that... BTW, I could also supply a second XJ-S :D

Hi Simon, It could be a bit of fun. In the Prisoner opening, his Lotus goes under a suspended camera, impossible on an open public road. Drone flying is banned in the New Forest so going over a camera is the only option. I thought of a sheet of lead to hold the camera to the road as Paul has mentioned, I'm not too worried if my old camera gets destroyed but I'm more concerned about putting a hole in the sump!

I can speed up or slow down the footage to give the best result so 40mph would be fine. It needs co-ordination to place the running camera in the road at the right time and to retrieve it after, dustpan and brush will be supplied! As you say, a two pass shot to give the illusion of the car coming towards and going away could look cool. There is a convenient lay-by half way along the road and a nearby car park to keep the other car out of shot.

There are already many videos detailing all the airfields so a different take on it needs thinking about, I also don't want to give the impression of an XJS, Jaguar or any car being driven carelessly. Many things to think about.

Either way, it would be good to meet up and have a go.
