Loan of 6 litre transmission ecu for a couple of days?

Postby JamesD » Sun Sep 09, 2007 11:04 pm

I have a '94 6 litre V12 with with a believed genuine only 30k miles. I have owned it since 2001, when I also joined JEC.

It has the late auto 4-speed box, which occasionally (ever more frequently and normally after having driven for a while, not typically when cold) sticks in second gear, necessitating it to be driven screaming along at high revs till I can stop safely / conveniently. It has also has started to develop quite an abrupt change.

Sometimes, if I hold my nerve and keep my foot down when I am e.g. pulling on to a quiet motorway, when the engine reaches the red line in second it will then change up automatically.

Two separate, local small, independent Jag. specialists have tried unsuccessfully to affect a long term cure. Finally, my local main dealer (Webber of Basingstoke) suspected the wiring loom or electrical connectors to the top of the 'box were defective, so they stripped the exhaust system and goodness knows what else to gain access and thoroughly check all of this, but found it all to be OK. Their proposal now is to replace the transmission ecu but that would cost almost 500 pounds, so they recommend first fitting a borrowed an ecu from an identical car and trying this, to see if it really does cure the problem, before splashing out on a new one. Unfortunately neither they nor I know of an identical car. If anyone is prepared to assist I would gladly make some donation to cover the hassle / inconvenience for them.

Thanks

James (near Alton, Hampshire)

Excellent! Is yours a very late '93 with the 4-speed auto-box like mine? I was told they only came out in Nov. '93.

If so, then just let me know when ever you are coming to Basingstioke area and I will arrange to meet you in Basingstoke, or wherever is most convenient for you - it might actually only be a 5 minute test swap-over of the ecu at Webber's that's required, if I'm lucky; that's what they reckoned anyway...
