How many 6 litre XJR-S left out there?

Postby zytek » Fri Mar 23, 2007 11:39 am

Hi all

Just wondering if anyone has an idea of how many of the 6 litre cars are left.

There are a few registered on this forum but the approximate production figures suggest there should be several hundred about.

In my nine years of ownership I have been collecting spares and technical data and in that time I have come across around 10 cars that have been scrapped, which seems quite a high number.

Also if anyone needs any details of wiring diagrams and test values or would like to borrow an ECU (I have 3!) to check on their car I would be happy to help.
Cheers

How many 6 litre XJR-S left out there?

Hi Zytek,
I have no idea how many of these wonderful beasties are still in existence, in fact I am not too sure how many were made, I have seen conflicting figures from several sources, but approx 1300 of the 5.3 and 6.0 cars seems likely. I would hope most are still being cherished.

I was lucky enough to get a very low mileage '89 6.0 about 18 months ago. After a troublesome first week when it suffered repeated intermittent ignition failures, which I finally fixed by finding a dry joint in the ECU loom, it has performed very impressively and reliably. I have collected a fair bit of useful information and diagrams too. One thing I haven't managed to resolve is the inaccuracy of the trip computer. It 'underestimates' the fuel usage by about 10-15% so always gives an optimistic MPG figure. Is this something that is to be expected or do you think I may have a fault somewhere?

Kind regards,
Glenn.

Glenn,

I've only recently put a trip computer in my 4.0 litre but I've already noticed some interesting discrepancies. I always fill up at the same garage if poss and brim the tank so am pretty sure that I'm always filling to the same point. Over the last 6 tanks the difference in trip computer fuel used figure to real fuel used figure has been:

.81%
-6.86%
2.09%
-12.24%
0.71%
-7.50%

I made a note of the type of driving I was doing and on the three occasions where the trip is underestimating significantly, I had very heavy consumption at the begiining of the tank eg lots of manoeuvering, car idling at rest etc. It's as if once you have very bad consumption at the begiing of the tank, the trip computer under-reads and can not recover by the end of the tank.

Just a thought.

Thanks for the response Glenn, nice to know thats there at least a few of us left.

As for my thoughts on the trip computer, I believe in the Zytek injection cars at least it works by calculating the time the injectors are activated and in turn produces an mpg figure. This works nicely in a lab where such things as fuel pressure and a hundred and one other variables are constant. However in the real world with the differences in tolerances between cars varying significantly then the figures are likely to be somewhat different to those produced under ideal conditions.

For fuel pressure alone the acceptable tolerance is around 10% and therefore two cars both within tolerance could display the same mpg but in reality one would be using 10% more fuel! Add into the equation all the other potential variables and the potential for differences are huge.

So, in short in my opinion you don't have anything to worry about, which is always a good thing on an XJR-S!

Not sure how the later system works Paul, but I would imagine its similar.

Cheers
Ant

How many 6 litre XJR-S left out there?

Hi

I have a 92 XJR-S, have had it for nearly 4 years now.

With regard to the production figures, quoting Nigel Thorley's XJS book there were 448 5.3 XJR-S built between 1988 & 90 and 682 (includes 50 convertibles for the USA market) 6.0's built between 1990 & 93, how many of those are facelifts is another question.

Out of the total I wonder how many went overseas especially to the USA?

Presuming 50% went abroad, the XJR-S over here will soon be a pretty rare beast
