Run What You Brung! Santa Pod

Postby poprivet » Sat Jul 29, 2006 2:38 pm

Here's a suggestion. Folowing Ralph's write up elsewhere on this forum, how about an XJS Forum gathering at Santa Pod?
www.rwyb.co.uk for information, dates left for this year are Aug 13th, Sep 3rd, Oct 15th, Oct 29th, and Nov 5th (ie, not limited to xjs-s's, let your mates who have xk8's, xj220's and any other Jaguar come to that, know!)

Please note this won't be an 'official' Jaguar Enthusiasts Club meeting, but an open day when anyone can turn up, pay a small fee and let rip! The difference is that we will meet up, have a run or two and generally have a fun day out. Who knows, it might inspire another future 'official' JEC meeting there!
Who's game?

I might well be interested in that, as I was very nearly cajoled into going to Pod a couple of weeks back.

Do you think they like blue smoke?

Excelent idea.
Blue smoke should be no problem as long as you are not dropping oil.
This is a very important point, any fluid spill causes the track to be closed whilst they clear it up, which doesnt go down too well!
The run itself doesnt really tax a good road car but several runs and waiting in the que can sometimes cause things to boil over. So its worth checking all you pipes and hoses and also have a look underneath in case any lubricant is making a bid for freedom. Make sure nothing can come loose or chafe (always good advise in many ways!).

A Jaguar run at 'the pod' is a great idea. I ran the XJR-S there about six weeks ago as a bit of test before the Woodbridge Speedtrial last weekend. It is great fun and only about £30 for entry and as many runs as you can squeeze in. I did 4 runs before noon but it did coincide with an England match so the number of cars was less than usual. Apparently some car nuts also like football... odd that ;)

For those that like a challenge, my best run was 14.883 seconds with a 'terminal speed' of 94.15mph. Not sure I like the term 'terminal' when used near my Jag though, it is too much like tempting fate ;) Can anyone beat my figures? I bet they can.

Cheers to all,
Glenn.

P.S. the car survived the experience intact... Well, the baffle plate did fall off from the O/S inner wing, but it did that on the way there, not actually at the 'pod'. The day would not have been complete without a problem of some sort ;)

Sounds like a challenge!
I'll get going to the hardware store to buy a couple of posts and an enormous piece of elastic.

Only 4 interested? shame. Anyway, in an effort to get this going can I suggest Sunday 29th October Quite late in the season, but I don't think it clashes with any of the race days and it will extend the normal meeting-up season. Of course anyone can go whenever they wish, it doesn't have to be on that date but I thought It might be fun to meet-up and compare notes on the day :P
Unless everyone finds that date out of the question, I will post a note on the other Forums (JEC and JW) in a few days to generate more interest.

By the way, if anyone is reading this who feels unsure about running their car up the strip, don't worry, you can just spectate if you want to.

Splendid, thats in my diary now.
My car will be at Littlecote (in the racing display area, next to the real race cars!) so maybe we can 'encourage' a little more participation.

Excellent idea. Here's hoping for dry weather :)

Nobody has disagreed, so 29th Oct it is. Ralph, could I ask you to place a note on the XJS Racing site to invite any other racers along? I know you are a regular contributer there so they may take more notice of you then me
We will be having a special XJS parking area at the Pod... at least we will when we all pile in next to whoever gets there first

Run What You Brung! Santa Pod

Afraid the only XJ-S I have is a cabriolet in several bits; however, I would like to bring my Aristocat if not tipping with rain, or low-cost series III XJ6 if it is. I assume that one will not be excommunicated from this forum for being too slow.
I note that open topped cars will need arm-protectors (as well as BS standard helmets) - could anyone guide me to more information as to what is required? I would presume that the long plastic disposable gloves used during the internal examination of cattle are not appropriate.
In ignorance,
Robin.

A BS approved lid can be had for as little as £29 from a good motorbicycle shop, as for arms, as far as i know they just need to be covered, so roll your sleves down (it will probably be raining anyway! ;))
It is very unlikely you will get into trouble on the strip (look at the in car video on my web site) but its always wise to considder 'worst case'. So think about what you would like to be wearing if you managed to flip the car. (which you wont).
Its a funny thing, but when you roll a car (sorry, that should be 'if') your natural tendency is to put your arm out to protect yourself. Unless you are superman and can actually hold a car up with one arm, it wont work. thats why they like open top car drivers to tie their wrist to something, velcro wrist band and a strap to anythink sturdy should do the job. But make sure it doesnt stop you steering!
Hope that helps.
