VIN number's ??

Well, I think it decodes as follows:

SAJ = Jaguar Cars ltd
J = vehicle is badged as a Jaguar
N = standard model XJS
A = Basline spec
E = Coupe
W = 5.3 B emissions or 5.3 post ECS (no idea what that last means)
3 = Auto, RHD
E = Facelift
N = 1992

183334 was actually built late 1991 according to JDHT

This is all explained quite well here:

No problem.

If you want a decoder that works for the XJS, Sean Straw's one here is pretty good:

Couldn't find it yesterday...

As Al has explained, your VIN is fine. Al's decoding is basically correct apart from the "N" which actually indicates a particular emission-type of UK & European 5.3 engines, not a 1992 car.

I wrote a fairly detailed article on decoding VIN numbers published in the mag back in early 2006, I think. If you're interested, drop me an email and I'll send you a copy.

If you get a trace record from Jaguar Heritage, it will give you all the basic build details, but I think from your VIN that the car was built in late December 1991.

Hope that helps.

Paul is THE authority on XJS VINs, but you could have saved yourself some time by Clicking the 'XJS Register & Gallery' link on our index page.

There is a link next to your entry 'VIN check' which decodes your VIN and compares it with the data you entered in the Register.

Unlike most of the on-line VIN checkers, which are for US VINs, it will handle most XJS VINs.
