Could any one tell me the easiest way to remove the sunroof headlining slider so I can recover it to match the new headlining which is ready to go in, (old one is out). A pointer to any publication or internet site giving details for idiots would be appreciated
Car is x300 soveriegn 96

i guess it might be possible to bend the material to fit through the hole, but it could be risky? essentially the sunroof aperture is smaller than the cover you want to remove.

Thanks Naki I have seen threads saying the large slider comes out in the tilt position and the small out the back after removing the rubber bungs or Its a two tone headlining.

when i had one here, i didn't try to figure out what you are trying to achieve as it was out already, but if you find a way, it will be good to know the details.

I did mine two weeks ago.
It is possible to remove both the large panel and the smaller panels, from within the car, without taking the whole sunroof frame.
You are correct that you need to tilt the sunroof and then give a quick 'jolt' upwards and outwards on the larger panel inside the car, this will then release it so that you are able to slide it out through the opening. Ensure you have a cloth or something on the top of your roof to protect the paintwork.
If you look at the final picture in the previous response, you will see a black cantilever on a spring which has a round lug on it. This is where the smaller panel is 'hooked' on to. Gently remove each side of the panel, by very gently pushing/pulling each unit away from each other (be careful, as these have a tendancy to snap) and indeed, the small panel will then slide all the way to the back. here you will see the two rubber bungs as previously stated, remove them and hey presto, the smaller panel will slide out of the rear.
Sorry that i didn't take any photos, but hope that this helps.

Update on x300 with sunroof headliner renewal, Replacement headlining was obtained from Headliner World for £190 it comes with enough material to cover the sliders. I also bought two spray cans of 120 degree trim glue £10 & a trim removal kit £12, I was hoping the colour would match & I would not have to do the sliders but this was not to be, The windscreen was removed by Discount Windscreens of Witham Essex for £30 with a quote of £200 to install a new screen when required as the original had started to delaminate in the bottom corners. Sunvisors were taken down, cantrail handles. prise chrome covers off then undo allen key screws, the two plastic supports at the back have little covers which need prising away to undo screws. Centre console open glass case undo plastic screw console will drop down pull back away from two v supports at front. I removed both front cantrails completely the rear I pulled away as much as possible as they have the seat belt anchors attached, a little tip about the studs which hold cantrail on you will break some, instead of paying jaguar rip of prices they wanted £25 for 10 of each male & female go to Byronix site on Ebay landrover disco back door studs male & female 10 of each £6 delivered & they fit a treat. Prise the four little supports away holding the headliner in place, The alarm sensors on each side in the middle are glued to the inside of the liner so have to be removed when its out I reached in & disconnected wires through open sunroof. With the sunroof in tilt position pull the large slider up making sure two springs clear obstacles, its held in by two push fit spring clamps on the front & it just slides out the top, Release small slider at the front by pressing the needle roller out its sprung loaded so it will spring up, push to rear & remove metal push on clip on top of runner this will spring off dont loose it, then release slider from runner by unhooking catch nearest to you on both runners then lift back up it should detatch from front hooks be carefull I broke a hook Jaguar want £238 for repair kit they are not available seperately, I managed to get a complete sunroof off a x308 (they are the same) delivered for £72 from breakeryard. It also gave me the chance to see the mechanism fully in the open, if you do break one you will have to remove rubber bungs on end of carriage to get runner of. To reassemble fit small slider on first making sure metal clamp is on firmly after clicking down on hooks on runner push to front to line up hole with needle roller pull down & fit in hole. Slide large slider down through tilted sunroof push against sunroof minding springs to get needle roller behind support which will hold it in place, Test if tilt & slide mechanism works. Install new headlining having already glued alarm sensors in place reconnect wires through open sunroof, Push supports up to hold headliner in place reinstate trim furniture. I did a muppet job on the light console so had to do it again so I did not have enough material to do sunvisors but they look quite good a slightly different colour. New windscreen fitted four months after being taken out £235 really lovely job & inside looks the doggies conkers £476 altogether. Will try to upload finnished pictures but Im no computor whiz kid, I am afraid I lost pictures as I did it to Ucash Virus on Laptop. now wheres that list of other things I gotta do.

I know the x300 and x308 are the same and I have just had a look at an xj40 sunroof for sale on EBay, It does not look the same as my spares roof in the garage, mine is an x300.
