Interior refit process

Postby Doherto » Wed Apr 03, 2019 4:01 pm

Following on from my head liner installation in January, and after a three months of hell with a health problem, I am now ready to start the interior refit as I have finished the mechanics and had my car checked over by a local Jaguar specialist garage. As I remember the complete removal of all interior parts was not too complicated and I have many many notes and pictures to support the reverse process. However, I am posting this to request any advice on the re-installation order of everything I have ready to go into a completely stripped out interior. I thought soundproofing first, door seals and furflex (Doors are off by the way) followed by the A B C and D Post panels and then dash. I have searched all over the web for advice and found nothing, not even that "Chris Motors" blog that was so useful a while ago. Hopefully someone can either send me a link to some on line content or advise the best rotation of installation to avoid removal of work to facilitate another piece of the jigsaw, etc etc. This is just prep work for the start of the process at Easter but I would like to get the appropriate parts and fixings ready to make some good progress. Your thoughts and advise appreciated, and any little tips and hints that may help. :D

Hi, there is some detail in the Practical Classics and Car Restorer book on Mk2 Jag restoration (ISBN 1 873098 07) on this which I used when I did mine about 10 years ago.
The order you suggest sounds OK but as you say it was relatively easy as long as you treat it like a meccano set building up the levels. One thing I wished I did was to ensure I used a good sound prrofing pad in the doors to replace the horse hair type stuff which was originally there. There are some excellent new materials available now if you do not mind losinga bit of originality.
Best of luck.

Paul, thank you for your reply. I found and ordered a copy on e bay ( what would we do without it ). Any additional tips and tricks appreciated if anyone has encountered any specifically difficult areas or found some easy ways of doing something.

One small point, did all your window winder mechanisms work as this is a good time to check all the teeth are there or there are no fractures. A tooth came off mine after reinstallation and I had to take the door apart again!
Also I found warming the door trim and retightening it made the inside look a lot better, but then I had rebuilt them with new door cards etc and repadded armrests etc. Don't forget the plastic sheet behind them either. Hoping not teaching you to suck eggs.

Paul, no problem with offering advice i may or may not need thanks. I have now received the practical classics book which confirms that its furflex, cant rail wood and then door seals. Now i need to have a look to see if i need to fit the post panels before the furflex. Unfortunately the book does not offer much more in the way of schedule but as you say its easy enough, not rocket science. I have ordered some of the door soundproofing from Woolies and fortunately already serviced the window winding mechanisms one of which i need to place due to broken teeth. I have also prepared new door cards covered in thin leather which i found at a great place for leather in Rochdale, details available if anyone is looking for leather, its a massive warehouse supplying the furnature industry with so many hides they move them about on pallets with forklifts. I bought two full hides of "old stock" which was a perfect colour match for my new seats for believe it or not £120😀 At the moment i guess i am going to start with the sound proofing, post panels, furflex, cant rail wood and then door seals. Followed by completing the interior lights, sunvisors and rear view mirror. And then onto the dash😬 Unless anyone can advise a better or more appropriate process.

Yes please :!: I've got four door cards and two bench uprights to do for my last restoration: a Mk IX that's been ready for re-build forever. I don't know whether they'll do a match for Jaguar Suede Green but can always send them up a sample

Thanks for the info and contact in advance

http://www.crestleather.com Is the web site. I am not sure how and if they will deal with a remote enquiry but you can only try. I arrived at the warehouse with a sample and a sob story, and they were really helpful. Let us know how you get on as it could be useful to others.

Aha :!: They're listed in Finchley Road down here. Did you go to a Manchester site?
-- will pop in if Finchley with hankerchief at the ready :|
