I,m fitting the head liner in my mk2, i,m restoring and have only got two pics of the fitting to the top of the front screen,it looks like there is a mould that has been fibreglassed to the shell, can anyone advise
Re: fitting new headliner
Hi,
Its a long time since I fitted mine and I have a photo of me with socks on my hands to stop any sweat marks getting on the material.
You obviously know of the 6 wire hoops that lift the centre section of the roof and clip into the 'cant ' rails. I seem to remember that above the doors there were 'fibre' strips that the head lining was tacked to, but I don't remember any at the front and rear screens. I think the idea is that you glue the headlining to the sides above the doors working from the centre forward and aft, then do the front and rear screen part. I do remember turning the headlining up over the screen edge to keep it in place and using pegs to hold it in place as it dried, then tack above the doors. Very little tension is used so as not to create wrinkles, also mark the headlining as you fit it over the screw holes for mirror and sun visors.
Gluing first then tacking allows you to move the material a little to get the wrinkles out.
best of luck,
Brian

Are you referring to the veneered strips around the windscreen?
I don't know the size, but can measure them tomorrow!

no not the vaneer, if you can see in the pic there is a piece of wood that the fixing plate for the rear view miror is atached to, ill see if I can get a better pic brian
Re: fitting new headliner
I've been out to the car and had a feel about and I can't see or feel anything underneath the headlining. I've looked through my old photographs and again can't find anything, and I certainly can't remember anything.
I vaguely remember odd bits of plywood about the place that were rotten which I replaced with what I had available at the time, in practice marine ply would be the better option.
Sorry I can't do more to help (cr*p memory).
Just out of interest the door cars were warped hardboard which I remade from thin plywood and varnished to last longer before covering with vinyl.
Best wishes

Re: fitting new headliner
Hi just striped out what’s left of my roof lining and treated the rust can anyone please let me know if the rear view mirror base goes over or under the lining it seems obvious it goes under so why is it chromed!!! A picture to see how it looks would be great as the one on my car was torn and missing at this point, seeing what it should look like will make it a lot easier to fit
Thank you, Jaz
