XJS HEADLININGS

lots has been talked about and said regarding head-linings for XJS and many other cars for that matter

I have been lucky enough to sit on the panel that meets with JLR Classic and discusses obsolete parts, we all know head-linings are NLA and have been for some time, allied to the fact that some of the aftermarket items are of dubious quality

JLR have agreed to investigate the re-manufacture of one XJS head-lining, that of the pre face lift coupe, with apologies to face lift coupe owners, but they would only agree to investigate one product at the moment

what I need to know for the next meeting on 22 May, is what demand there is likely to be, and what price would you pay if we could get a batch re-done

I obtained mine from the XJS Club and was quite pleased with the result; very good fit and came with extra material to cover the cant rails and rear quarter panels so that it all matched. Been on a couple of years now with no sign of dropping.
Simple to fit too.

Headliner world seems to be the place to get XJS headlining kits (I believe they supply the XJS club).

Pre-face lift door handles, front wings that actually fit and chrome bits seem in short supply. The quality of re-chroming work undertaken by some advertiser(s) in the club magazine is really variable and trying to find a decent second hand chrome section that is not rusted through (yet oddly described as 100% perfect) is becoming very hard.

Actually my personal list would be for my XJS pre-face lift would be;
Door handles
Door hinges
Door mirror chrome cases

Getting back on topic, I think the demand for Headlining with new biscuit etc would probably be limited to those performing serious restorations to near concours (or a KWE type resto). Most folks would probably go with Headlining world or similar if they have managed to avoid the pit falls of sh1t kits marketed by some other suppliers. Just my opinion based on my own preference used in my modified / pampered cat...

I agree that headlining's whilst sometimes a pain are easy enough to engineer. What I think better is a supply of the parts that are becoming increasing difficult to source. Facelift headlights a good example. But other things as well. I had cause to get hold of a bulkhead power terminal (because I was loosing current) and mine just sheared off. Did in the end but a real pain. Yes I know I could have made one if really needed. A couple of years ago my nearside front window was smashed by a thief intent on steeling my radio. Radio not a problem but the window was.

Might be quite an interesting topic to get feedback on what parts and part availability caused the greatest inconvenience replace.

I agree with BigCatXJS - a lot of people want chrome sections and bumpers because they were all so susceptible to damage.

I can't see how if they manufacture a good quantity of them they couldn't price them cheap enough to make them a viable alternative to risking eBay!!

But back on topic given that so many fail, a proper solution would be nice ... even if it is just for pre-facelift folk (facelift here!)

The foam backed material is no problem at all, nor is the high temperature adhesive, these can be easily sourced but it is difficult to imagine the original 'biscuit' being made available due to the fragile nature and size. Any official replacement would need packing very carefully or the delivery process would result in many claims for damages.

A rigid fibreglass substrate would be practical but I assume would be inferior and much less sound absorbent.

I replaced my headlining material and managed to re-use the original biscuit although it had been damaged in the past by someone installing the lead for an in-car telephone aerial (So 1980's!). Slightly thinned PVA glue was used to soak into it and once hardened gave a good surface to take the spray adhesive.
