Navigation unavailable

Postby dglick » Sun Dec 19, 2021 4:38 pm

Hi all, just traded in my XF to a 2018 XJ, which drives beautifully, and feels quite different from the XF in a positive way.

So I keep getting SATNAV Unavailable, which is a real pain, as I rely heavily on satnav. The satnav has word twice, but every other occasion no matter what I do it says navigation unavailable, and I cant even get into navigation settings, when it does this.

I have read many forums that say to check the SD card is in properly or take it out and put it back in. I have searched everywhere and cannot for the life of me find an SD Slot. There is nothing in the boot, or in the under boot area, and in the the centre console there are 2 * USB's, and a slot for a Micro Sim Card, but no SD Card.

Any clues anyone please? How to reset and get it working again, and where on earth is the SD Card  / mapping ?

Hi DG, not up to speed with the XJ, but presumably it is not overly far removed from the system in my Range Rover Sport (RRS) from the same period. In the RRS, the navigation is by subscription for the updates, although the basic system / maps is on a hard disc drive (HDD). There is a micro SIM card in the slot between the USB slots in the centre cubby and it provides for in car Wi-Fi, car phone, i.e. not your mobile, over air updates, amongst other services. You buy a suitable data SIM card from Amazon, quite cheap and works on a time basis rather than a data used basis, simply stick it in the slot and it works - no activation process necessary (in the RRS anyway).
On the couple of times your Satnav has worked, did you program it whilst near your house? It may be that the car was seeing the house Wi-Fi and that helped it.
Gadgets and trickery is fine when it all works as it should, but a pain when it glitches.
Hope to hear how you resolve it.

Thanks for the response Jim

Surely if its on the HDD I should be able to use it without having a Micro Sim in, as this is how it worked on the XF. One of the time it works I was at home, and one time I wasnt, but everything inbetween it hasnt worked, there doesnt seem to be any rhyme or reason.

I'm guessing its going to need a call to the dealership already, after only 2 days of ownership !! I'll keep you posted, Cheers Dan

Hi Dan, now that I think about it, the navigation on the RRS did 'grey out' a few times when I first got the car, i.e. would not operate from the touchscreen no matter what - same for the entertainment. The fix was a software update from the dealership, under warranty thankfully.
Sometimes I suspect all elements like the SIM card need to be present to allow systems to operate correctly. My neighbour is currently experiencing problems with his 2003 registered Volvo S70 - engine management lights on and engine 'hunts' at idle speed, the problem is associated with the fact that one of his wing mirrors was recently damaged and apparently the fact that a wing mirror is missing is confusing the ECU! Go figure?????

Thanks Jim just ordered a basic sim with £10 topup that lasts for 4 months so hopefully that will work, as I suspect it wont use much data ?!

Will also call Jaguar to see what they have to say, cheers.

Car is back in with Jaguar again, as the fix they did dint work, after they re-installed the entire data comms software, there were no satnmav voice controls, and most of the time it just said satnav loading and then it didnt, so I am again back with a loan car, as they have logged a case with Jaguar, to find a fix!

Hi Dan,
Lets hope they can find a permanent solution.
Must be really annoying for you.
Good luck and take care.
