Front Banana Arms

So here's something I personally have not seen before. A video healthcheck carried out at my XJ's annual service and then emailed to me.

It appears that after 65k miles (and 7 years ) the bushes in the front banana arms are splitting. So have done some research on this, I could just replace the bearings, polybush sell a replacement, but then I have to get the arms off and go through all the procedures associated with that - and at £50 quid a bearing its probably not worth the effort as SNG Barratts can provide replacement arms including bearings for £130 plus VAT the pair.

The obvious time to replace will be when the winter wheels come off in 2/3 weeks time. I will post any update of note then,

Ray. Take at look at my X350 suspension posts. The banana arms and other suspension parts on 2002.5> S-type, X350/358 and X351 are identical. Genuine new Jaguar OE arms are at an all time low price so make a quick, reasonably priced in and out job. Wheel base length/caster angles should be checked once any new bushing has been fitted.

Powerflex bushes offer a tried and trusted alternative with warranty that exists as long as you own the car. Fitting obviously requires the existing arms to have the bushes pushed out with a press but fitting a pair of new Purple Series Powerflex also needs the press for ease of fitting. Fitting of a set of Purple Series virtually future-proofs against having to fit more OE units at a later date. The choice is yours.

Almost my entire car now has a combination of Purple and Black Series bushes fitted. They tighten the feel of the car a little as well as reducing the need for doing more replacement bush bashing in the future.

I hate to lower the tone Mike, but when you talk about bush bashing it takes me back to my days as a young single man - that was what I was trying to achieve on a Saturday night!

Thanks for that information I never realised the components were common that far back, so that's a clear reason why the price is much lower than I feared. I am ignoring David's successful attempt to lower the tone.

Have opted for replacement arms this time around as I anticipate this particular X351 will not be my last,- picking them up from Stoneleigh on Sunday .
