warranty renewal time again!!! :)

warranty renewal can anyone recommend a good warranty had a quote back for the Jaguar warranty approx 1500 that covers all factory fitted components with Jaguar asst.? If anyone had had experence with renew please let me know it would be very much appreciated.

Admittedly some years ago now, I bought a Jaguar extended warranty when I bought a Jaguar-approved used 4 litre XJ from a main dealer after the first year's inclusive warranty ended. The price then was similar price to that you are showing now. Within that warranty year I had a problem with a sudden coolant leak that developed from the thermostat housing, but fortunately I was close enough to the dealer when it happened so got there without any problems, so I have not experienced Jaguar Assist.

The problem was fixed routinely, but what was really annoying was that Jaguar refused the claim for the work to replace the failed gasket saying that the part was 'a consumable' despite the dealer's representations on my behalf that it was a perfectly valid claim. Jaguar later had the brass neck to quote me for another year at an even higher figure. It will come as no surprise that I did not renew my Jaguar warranty thereafter!

I then bought a warranty from Warranty Wise at a lower price but found that when needing repairs it was still fairly difficult to get agreement to get things done, as there was usually haggling over what is a 'failure' and what is 'fair wear and tear' . Another factor was that the cheaper warranty price did not fully cover Jaguar main dealer hourly labour rates, leaving me to pay any difference. Since then I decided to save the money on an annual warranty outlay and spend out if necessary. You can't always win though; I had to spend out about £2.2K on a gearbox rebuild for the 4 litre XJ at 95,000 miles, but none of the warranties on the market would have covered this fully at that mileage.

At the end of the day you pays your money and takes your chances!

I think of it this way. The price of the warranty has to pay for itself, and make a profit for the warrantor - much like electrical goods insurance. Therefore overall the company rakes in more money in premiums than it pays out in claims. I prefer to choose a good product in the first instance, look after it well and off set any repair costs against the saved premiums.

I guess it's all down to how you feel about managing risk and how much the financial outlay is acceptable to you. If you pay for the warranty, have an expensive problem that recoups your warranty outlay you are going to be happy. If you pay for the warranty and have zero problems you may not feel so happy. I'm in Robbie's camp. Keep your car well maintained and accept that repairs will have to be paid for as and when they arise. It's then down to chance if you win or lose financially but if you win then the profit is yours.
