It seems the announcement of a 2 litre F Type is not far-fetched but could be imminent!
There had been reports last week of an F Type Coupe being tested at the Nurburgring with an engine note that was guessed to be a 4-cylinder.
Well, on Sunday, we were passed by an F Type in the camouflage that was used on the original teaser campaign cars. As it passed, I assumed it might have been one of those early cars but then noticed that it was on a "16" registration. So today, I checked the DVLA website and it showed that this registration belonged to a black 2 litre Jaguar first reg on 1st April 2016!
I'm guessing this must a high-powered petrol turbo variant of the Ingenium engine. I wonder what power output has been considered acceptable if it's to compete with (I'm assuming) the 718 Boxster etc?

Re: 2 litre F Type?
Certainly a prospect that will cause much divided opinion
I guess Jaguar are only (vaguely) following the tradition of introducing a new engine into a sports car

Re: 2 litre F Type?
It's tempting to jump in with two feet and lots of exclamation marks after reading about the prospect of a 2 litre F-Type but, as an admirer of 1960's V8 Mustangs who would have thought that a 4 cylinder 2016 Mustang would be any good? The current version doesn't have a V8 rumble but, in reality, it's no slouch. If a 2 litre F-Type brings Jaguar sports car ownership to a wider audience, what's not to like about it? Mike.

Re: 2 litre F Type?
I suppose it is aimed at the entry level market punters whom after owning the car for a while, might upgrade to one of the more powerful models.
The fleet market would probably snap them up. For company ownership, I imagine it would fall into a much lower tax bracket and be an attractive proposition.
I would expect the performance to be rather good bearing in mind the low weight of the car. OK, there is no soul stirring six or eight cylinder growl or rumble but no doubt the model will be allowed a little of a snarl.
I would of thought this car would be quite a sales success.

Re: 2 litre F Type?
I really do hope that Jaguar do launch the 2.0 F type.
It would as already said, open the car to a wider audience and that is what Jaguar need to do to survive! Mercedes BMW et al all sell smaller engined versions of their cars so Jaguar need to too. (Hybrid and electric next too?)
If it is launched I will buy one and use it as a daily car. I cant justify using a V6 and definitely not a V8 as a daily car. Hopefully a 2.0 litre will be more affordable too!!
Although it is more than likely a test mule for the new engine

The 2.0 is released
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/cars/news/ja ... er-f-type/
Maybe it will be scoffed at by some purists, but surely acceleration from 0-60mph in 5.4 seconds, and a maximum speed is 155mph is more then ample for todays roads. How many of us would use even a fraction of that sort of performance in everyday use?
Obviously if money is no object then it is penny pinching but if it means Jaguar sell more units and afordable used ones are eventually on the market then it must be a good thing.

Re: 2 litre F Type?
Performance on paper is similar to my 2001 XKR but rather more efficient! But I have a V8 and a supercharger to put the hairs on the back of my neck up. I can't imagine that the 4 pot will give the same feeling.
What's next? Diesel? It will make the car even more "accessible". The V6 diesel has 300bhp (like the 2 litre) but loads more torque - could make a quick but economical car?

Re: 2 litre F Type?
Small engines always worry me.
Remember the BMW 1800 four banger installed in the 3 and 5 Series cars? It used to get driven overly hard and the mortality rate for those engines was horrific. Few problems occurred with even the two litre six pot by comparison.
Were I to buy two litre F-type, I`d be greatly concerned at its residual values in later life. Lets face it, if you are like many of us within the second hand car fraternity, you would tend to choose a bigger engined version because it is probably going to command more interest when you later come to sell it. General advice leans towards buying the highest spec models rather than entry level units.
What can we compare this new F-type with as regards to what was available when most of us were forty years younger? Perhaps an MGB 1800 with its hairy brother, the MGB 3500 V8. There would only be one option for me and you what know what that would be.

Re: 2 litre F Type?
Mike says, small engine cars worry him. Why, do they all go by you ?
This new 2litre F type might be as quick as my shopping trolley ! sounds a bit of OK to me.
My Mini Cooper 2litre SD has outstanding performance. Something like 80/90 mph at 1800 rpm . Change down at 100 mph if you want . Goes round corners like on railway lines . I thrash it most of the time and I think when I last checked it was 48 mpg tank to tank.
When Sport mode is selected the suspension stiffens as does the steering and engine performance improves, don't normally use it but frightens the crap out of me. Wheel spin in second gear on a dry road readily occurs - never use traction control.
There , now you know so bring on the 2litre F type.
