Has anybody fitted any tyres other than Dunlop? if so have they worn any
better, my rear tyres have lasted about 22000 miles but the centres have
worn down before the outer edge.

Dave, this year I needed 4 new tyres as they had worn on the inner edge, despite the tracking being spot on and the alignment when checked. This was at approx 21,000 miles. As this was a large expense as it was also at the time of its 3 year service I asked the main dealer if there were any options. They suggested Federal 595 EVO tyres as a good substitute. I looked at these on the net and they seemed reasonable performance. As I do not do so many miles now I thought I would try them.
I have found them quieter than my original Dunlops and dry weather performance seems very good.
My car is a XF 3.0 S and I find if I have it in sport mode then the wheels spin readily when accelerating hard during wet/damp conditions although I have not found them wanting when cornering.

My car is also a 3.0 D S, four years old I replaced all the original Dunlops having done only 25k miles - which by all accounts is reasonable. Depending on whether your tyres are 18 inch or 19 inch there are not that many choices around; I was told not to go for the Avons - I would have like Michelins but they were horrendously expensive and were not readily available - I believe Goodyear do 19 inch in Eagles too. I ended up putting on 4 more Dunlop SportMaxxs which cost a cool grand on a special offer. (Special for who?) So far have covered 3k miles and they seem great - I was recommended to have the alignment checked and it was found wanting so hoping that will improve the life of this set.

We should all keep a record of our experiences as the XF does seem heavy on tyre wear - though I have no experience of E Class or the latest 5 series Audi A6 to compare against...

I agree with keeping the records of tyre wear. My car is on 20 inch wheels. I had a Mercedes CLS 320 CDI before and it was still on its original tyres with 27,000 on the clock when I sold it (3 yrs old). All tyre wear appeared even. The tyre was Pirelli.

with Dunlops and I've managed to get them at £212 each fitted.

£212 for Dunlops on an XF is very reasonable. I was charged £282 per tyre for my firt 2009 (59 plate) XF with 20 inch wheels - the previous tyres being Michelin.

Hi, the tyres I mentioned earlier were £113 + VAT each fitted by the main dealer so a bit of a saving when added to the main service and rear brake pad/sensors I had done.

Hi. My rear tyres soon need replacing. The current Dunlops have worn well and give good grip, but they are quite noisy on anything but smooth Tarmac. I see one owner suggested Evos - anyone have any first-hand experience or other recommendations? Kev

I`ve found Pirellies to be rather noisy.

I love Continentals which last well followed by Avon and Dunlop. I have Avons on the back of my S-type and they are lasting extremely well and noise wise I have no complaints.

I got a great deal recently on Goodyear Eagle F1s and have found them quiet and an added bonus is the substantial rim protector on the tyre edge

On a cheaper front, I replaced my original Dunlops with Falkens, which I though very good value for a pretty reasonable tyre.

Dave W, says his tyres have worn the centre tread away. I have always been led to believe this is as a result of over inflation. Any comment anyone.

I can`t think of any other reason. Over inflation causes the centre of the tyre to contact the road surface and wear, leaving the edges effectively somewhat "up in the air" and reducing contact and wear on those areas.

For the record and to add to my post of a couple of years ago - my new set of Dunlop Sport Maxxs have now done 25k - just swapped onto the Winter tyres before Xmas and there is still 3mms left to go on all 4. So I might get 30k plus out of this set...
