Tyre Pressure Monitoring System

Postby MalLew » Thu Jun 19, 2014 1:26 pm

I wish to draw all members (Not only XF owners) that have this system fitted, to, what I consider, a serious defect. There is dis-similar metals where the TPS collar fixes the valve to the rim = corrosion and failure of the aluminium collar. Having recently driven to the South of France on the autoroutes, just before I commenced the return journey, I decided to check the tyre pressures. Utter astonishment as the collar on the first wheel tested broke into 3 bits and fell on the ground, leaving the air pressure in the tyre as the only thing holding the valve to the rim. The other 3 collars were also cracked awaiting total failure. How long I had been driving the car like this is anybody's guess.

The only remedy in the time scale was to remove all the tyres from the rims, retro-fit standard valves to all the wheels and drive home with the Tyre Pressure System Fault warning and a perfectly safe set of wheels. Now facing a MoT, the opinion locally is that it will fail the test even though the system was fitted as an Option when new in 2009. Nobody in the South of England is prepared to modify the software in the Car Configuration File to remove the system monitoring from the car as many other 2009 XF models were delivered. Not having the time to drive up to Derby, where MGA Jaguar could remove it, I am now faced with having to pay to have all the tyres removed again and new sensors fitted to get rid of the warning, putting the car, in what I think, is a less safe condition than without the system, and get a new MoT.

An internet search for XF Tyre Pressure Monitoring System Failure (http://www.jaguarforum.co.uk/f61/tyre-p ... 48956.html) produces interesting results and shows that Jaguar are aware of the problem and insist that all 4 are changed if a single corroded collar is present, yet no warnings from them or the local dealer have been given.

I urge everyone with the TPMS fitted to keep a very careful check on the condition of these valves - a failure of the collar at motorway speeds could be fatal.

It may be worth having a word with National Tyres. They were very helpful when I had TPS leakage problems recently on my Citroen. They carried replacement valve assemblies so that the existing sensor could be re-used. Working on them didn't worry them at all.

Like yours, they were an option at purchase but nobody now wants to disable the system so that normal valves can be used. I'm not looking forward to the day that the sealed internal batteries fail, the main dealer will be rubbing his hands with glee.

I recently had my back tyres replaced on my 2010 XFR. The valve nut on one of my wheels disintegrated during the process and it was replaced (free of charge) by the mobile KiwkFit mechanic. It fell into two halves while the tyre was being fitted. The others look OK superficially, but there is definitely a problem here.

Surely this is an important enough topic to warrant an article in the magazine? It’s not the first time I have heard of people having trouble with the valve collars but I suspect most owners are unaware of the issue!
