ABS Not Available annunciation

Postby rosemary » Fri Nov 05, 2021 5:05 pm

Hello Folks
Shortly after doing the rear damper bush and Drop Link on the nearside(Left) rear I had the ABS and DSC alarm up. Checked with my fault reader and it showed Nearside Front Speed Sensor fault. Nowhere near where we were doing the work. So had a look and couldn't see anything obvious and therefore went on the hunt for a replacement. After a few searches and availability I went to Euro-parts who had the right unit in stock for £109. Various prices were quoted at different suppliers from circa £20 to £163. Dread to think what the Jaguar price was. Duly collected and made a date with my mate to come and fix it. Took the car through a car wash today and low and behold the fault cleared. What is going on!!!!!!!. Still going to renew it though .I notice the tiniest little notch in the sensor moulding to correctly locate the sensor in the hole in the hub unit. I think perhaps when the Hub bearing assembly was changed in 2018 (at a Garage during a Service) the sensor wasn't quite fixed the right way around, although it worked on the reluctor ring, it was only by the skin of it's teeth(pun). Most models/makes have a retaining bolt that fits the sensor correctly but not this model it has only a spring clip which could allow the sensor to be 90 deg out .

Hello Folks
Quick update

I plugged in my code reader and got DTC 003107 Front Left Sensor. Referring to the code list from my S-Type Maintenance Disc (Courtesy of JEC Shop) this is defined as an incorrectly fitted sensor. How about that!!!

Hello Folks
Well I got under the car when the weather improved a little and fiddled about with the sensor end in the hub. Removed it and re-orientated it as per the slots on the replacement I bought from Euro-parts. Everything has work fine so far. Have used the car several times lately with no reoccurrence of the ABS alarm. So I am canceling my Jaguar Maintenance Agreement for annual servicing, they have told me my car was too old for the service agreement to continue anyway!!! so no loss to anybody. I now have a ABS speed sensor kit that I don't need, cost £109 any offers will be considered. I might keep it though just in case knowing how reliable Jaguars are!!!!

Hello Folks
Well hit a pot hole going to Watlington, shook the car, should have known to avoid it, go down that road regularly, it’s the drain manholes over the years the road surface has been relayed but the drain grates haven’t been lifted to match the new surface level, clearly single cell organisms doing the planning and instructions to the contractors, anyway the ABS alarm came up again straight away, knew immediately the sensor had shifted, very annoying. I have a replacement, from Europarts, kept it just in case, don’t think a Car Wash will fix it again. It’s snowing now so the replacement will have to wait, very annoying.

Hello Folks
Just a quick update:- still got the ABS alarm up, weather is just too bad to get under the car , however another problem (caused by the manhole on the Watlington road no doubt) is that the nearside rear tyre keeps losing pressure. Got fed up with pumping it up and went to my local garage, thought I had a puncture, however, when Chris the mechanic had a look when he removed the wheel it turns out that the inner rim of the Alloy has a crack and that is where the air is escaping. Wheel refurbish/welding now needed and a new tyre perhaps.

Update:- Got the wheel back from Alloy Weldcraft, High Wycombe. Just over £200 for Weld Crack, Refurb and Straighten Buckle. Looks like new. Tyre OK and refitted and wheel balanced. Will fit to offside rear, tyre has 6.0 mm as against 3.0mm on one currently fitted. Got to get 4 wheel tracking checked now as an added precaution given the wallop the nearside has taken. Still got to replace the ABS sensor though. Weather is still awful.

Update
Weather a bit better, got togged up with coat, hood, wooly hat, and gloves. jacked car up and took wheel off. Noted that the ABS sensor was out of its socket a little and the connecting cable disappeared behind the wheel arch liner. Removed a plastic retainer and bent the liner back. Jaguar really do things to make replacement of bits difficult for those of us who get under their cars. The connecter is buried in the footwell and engine bay structure and you can get at it with only one hand and a sense of touch to release it. Perseverance and patience is the name of game to disconnect and then reconnect the new sensor cable. Fitting the sensor head and routing the cable in to the hub is straight forward baring a bit of force to get the sensor head home properly getting the seal ring to slide home into the ring in the hole. The retaining clip is absolutely useless no more can be said about that. Turned the engine on and alarm was no more, connected my reader and cleared the alarm record successfully. All back to normal, lesson to all:- avoid potholes or sunken gratings.

Glad you got it sorted Dave.
Potholes are a nuisance,I try to avoid them if I can but that's easier said than done sometimes.
Well done on fixing your problem.
Take care and stay safe.

Thanks Andy appreciate the support. Still haven't warmed back up yet but used the car again today with no alarms, tasted the relief.
